 About Lisa:
I am a 24-year-old with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Speech Communication from Muskingum College in Ohio, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude. In terms of my English major, writing is my specialty. I took advanced creative writing classes and served on an editorial committee for our campus magazine. I also took classes in journalism and wrote for the campus newspaper. My speech communication major has given me a broad base of applicable knowledge in various areas, such as small group and interpersonal communication. I have an excellent understanding of learning styles, in which I am able to recognize and adapt to appropriately in a training/tutoring situation. Hands-on learning is something that I tend to lean toward. I like to ask questions and walk through things with students/trainees rather than lecturing or "telling." I currently work for an insurance company, where I am a corporate training and development instructor. I spend time in a classroom instructing trainees on commercial insurance processes. Additional teaching experience comes in the form of volunteering. I facilitated a group of foreign adult learners at a library on a weekly basis (for one year) in which I helped them become acclimated and familiar with American culture through topic-driven group conversation. I enjoy finding ways to help others learn, understand, retain, and apply. In my free time, I enjoy writing (naturally!), running/working out, reading, taking pictures, hiking, camping, and cooking. Volunteering is also a large part of my life, as I find it to be fulfilling.

Learn More About Lisa's Experience:
grammar
Grammatical accuracy is important not only in the subject of English, but also in every area of concentration. A solid understanding of vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling is essential in having the ability to write a clear and concise paper. This also contributes to the level of accredibility that the reader holds for the writer. I have had a wealth of experience in revising outlines, resumes, essays, and other documents for grammatical accuracy through both college and professional opportunities. There are easy tips that I often share with students to help them remember how to correctly format, punctuate, or word a document. I believe in helping the student understand the corrections that are necessary to their own compositions rather than revising and editing it, myself. I think it is important for the student to be actively involved in the process and to discuss what we are going through. I enjoy helping others in the construction of documents, particularly essays and resumes. It seems to be my niche.
powerpoint
PowerPoint is a program that I have been actively utilizing for the past 6 years or better. In college, I used this program as a visual aid to accompany verbal presentations. I currently use this program at work as a corporate trainer in teaching various pieces of each lesson. For a PowerPoint to be effective, it must be consistent. It must have appropriate color and font for the topic or audience at hand. The content must be listed in a concise manner without getting to "wordy." Slide transitions and animation are also important where appropriate. These are all things that I am experienced in not only using, but using efficiently.
study skills
I believe in understanding rather than memorizing when it comes to studying and learning material. I use interactive and hands-on approaches to achieve this. Flashcards are a tool that I often use for studying. The action of actually writing out the flashcards serves as study time, as well as reviewing them. Utilizing flashcards allows the learner to visually see the word and verbally repeat it out loud. It also induces active thinking in order to learn corresponding material from the front to the back of the card. A second tactic that I favor in terms of study skills is building correllation between old and new material. If a student learns and understands one piece of the puzzle, that piece can be used to learn the next. This can serve as a review for old material in the process of learning the new. Along with these two tactics, outlines and organized notes are also helpful. Highlighting specific information or writing notes in the margins of the material can also serve as a learning tool and provides extra assistance in understanding the material during a review or study session since those "in class" sidenotes are there to supplement other material. These are only a few methods to be used when studying. Subject matter makes a difference in which methods work better than others, as well as the learning style of the student. Study skills should ultimately be catered to these factors.
track & field
I have been an avid runner for the past 7 years, participating in 5K events and doing it daily on my own. I ran cross country and track in Junior High and High School, where I ran distance races and relays. I am educated in the signs of heat exhaustion, the importance of staying hydrated, what to eat before a race, and how to alleviate minor aches and pains. I have gained this through my experience on a team and as an individual runner. Health and wellness is important to me, as well as good competition. It poses great personal challenge and promotes not only great physical health, but great mental health, as well.
