About Shannon:

Ever since I taught my four-year old sister to read when I was eleven, I've been hooked on helping kids grow and learn. All throughout my adolescence, I both helped my younger brothers and sisters with their homework and tutored fellow Algebra I and II and Geometry students at my high school. I then graduated as salutatorian with a 4.0 average. At Georgetown University, I spent my entire undergraduate period tutoring four Malaysian middle school children in English for Speakers of Other Languages. I greatly enjoyed and relished our time together, as the kids progressed quickly from speaking only halting English to speaking, writing, and understanding the language fluently. As they moved through their middle school years, these children came to feel part of their community. As I pursued a Master's degree in Art Therapy at George Washington University, I spent a year doing an internship at a local hospital on a unit for children and adolescents with behavioral difficulties, gaining experience in working with struggling kids. After graduating with a 3.9 GPA, from 1999-2005, I served as a writing tutor for graduate students working on theses and other papers, having been recommended to do so by my faculty adviser. I truly love learning as much as I do teaching, and so am studying again, this time in order to obtain a Master's in Counseling from Johns Hopkins University. My current GPA is 3.9, and I plan to get a Ph.D. next. I am excited about the opportunity to tutor children, especially those in Grades 1-8. I have lots of patience and empathy for young children, and utilize imagination and real-world examples in explaining concepts and methods to them.
