My name is Danielle and I'm a Media Specialist/Librarian for a high school in Charlotte, NC. I started working as a children’s librarian in various branches in Brooklyn, NY and this allowed me to work closely with different school districts. I was allowed to see the different reading levels, requirements and teaching styles of a number of teachers in the public and private schools in Brooklyn. I had an opportunity to work within the main branch, which really enlightened me on learning more about different subjects. The main branch was located in a neighborhood, which attracted writers who utilized the library to do their research. I was able to help the writers research various topics and this was my first introduction to the world of journalism.
While working in a challenged neighborhood, I met another librarian who encouraged me to look into a career in publishing because I helped the writers with gathering info for their articles or books. I was soon hired by Essence Communications Inc. and began my career in magazine publishing. I worked for different publications associated with the company, worked on various media related projects, worked side-by-side with the PR team, helped with festivals, televisions specials, and appeared on a few TV shows and worked closely with every department within the organization over the last few years. But the most rewarding accomplishment was working with visiting student groups throughout the country and influencing them to become journalists and encouraging them to start their own businesses. I worked with hundreds of students and women’s organizations from all backgrounds and helped to encourage them to mentor the unfortunate. I strongly believe in giving back to the unfortunate.
The CEO, President and Editor-in-Chief (my mentor), allowed me to create my tours like a college lecture. I wanted to introduce the students into the world of magazine publishing dealing with entertainment. I formulated the visits to reflect a one day college course/lecture, which included the lesson plan (introduction lecture), tour (watching editors, sales and marketing teams) and Q & A (answering all questions).
I now work directly with the students, which allows me to be more of an influence to them.
I’m motivated with helping the students to stay focused on college and guiding them towards a career. It’s very rewarding to help a young adult or troubled teen into thinking beyond their circumstances. I was influenced by my parents who always had a planned vision and direction for themselves. My father was very aggressive about reaching all of his goals and he never took no for an answer. My father would say, “When there are obstacles, it’s only a slight set-back because there is always a way to reach your goal.”
