I am a recent graduate of William Smith College. I double majored in Psychology and French as well as developed my own individual minor, Cross Cultural Behavioral Studies. I spent a semester abroad in Avignon, France during the Spring 2007 semester and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I also completed the NYS teacher certification program in secondary French. After I receive my test scores, I will be applying for New York State certification. Our teacher education program was very hands-on. We were required to complete a minimum of 160 hours of in-classroom experience before we were allowed to start our student teaching assignments. Throughout the duration of the program, I worked in 4 different school districts teaching French to students in both middle and high school. I was also a French TA during college so I have experience working with students ranging from middle school all the way through college level course work. My approach to teaching is also very hands-on. I know that a lot of courses require large amounts of memorization, and while this is sometimes necessary, I feel that one can learn better by actually experiencing the information. For example, foreign languages have a lot of new vocabulary. Sitting down with a list of words to memorize may work for some people, but not for everyone. So, to make things more interesting, I try to come up with activities to USE the vocabulary rather than just looking at it. Aside from my teaching experience, I am also a very well-rounded individual having been very involved on my college campus. I was a member of several committees as well as the co-chair of the William Smith Judicial Board. My experiences are very broad and I believe that they will make me an even greater tutor because I have such a diverse background.
