About
Yukari
:
How exciting it is if my students can perform Japanese language and culture! My dream, being a Japanese language teacher in the US, has never changed. I have been interested in helping others find new, potential skills through learning a different culture that of Japan. My drive to become a Japanese teacher lies in my experiences of the same things during my last study abroad in the US. Then, before I entered the master’s program, I participated in the summer program at Portland State University to learn practical teaching skills of the Japanese language as a second language. Through the lecture and the teaching demonstrations in this program, I strengthened my teaching techniques and knowledge. The teaching method of providing authentic context to elicit real conversations touched my heart. The concept of this method is to perform the language and the culture. This learning experience was helpful when it was integrated with many valuable things that I learned in each class of this master’s program. This enabled me to find the direction toward my goal. My teaching strength originates my communication skills. I engage a student-reflected, communicative approach to language instruction - a methodology cultivated by both my classroom experiences and my academic knowledge in Japanese Linguistics. I have developed my professional skills of teaching Japanese with a variety of instructions at Harrison High School. This two years voluntary experience as a teaching assistant is especially valuable because I have developed and applied various teaching materials such as on-line videos (http://www.youtube.com/HarrisonJapanese), websites and pictures that create authentic contexts into my lessons. My action research through the master courses focused on the relationship between instructional characteristics and students’ motivation in Japanese language classrooms. This qualitative study showed that effective instructions should be interactive and cultural educating, which gives students further insights of Japanese culture while reflecting students’ interests and learning processes. Also, the study suggested that communicative learning experiences are significant for students’ language learning and motivation. This study contributes to the development of my motivational classrooms. Meanwhile, as a classroom teacher at Southern Indiana Japanese School, I have gained valuable skills of reflecting on students’ different learning styles, which can be applied on my reflective language teaching as well. I believe language learning enriches respectful relationships between people with different backgrounds. Therefore, teaching Japanese language and culture will be my life-long career. I am enthusiastic to continue to teach all levels of Japanese language and culture while developing effective and reflective instructions. I intend to contribute to the extension of Japanese language education at your institution.
