About
Elizabeth: |
I hold a Master's degree in Elementary Education for Certification and can help with making reading, writing and arithmetic enjoyable for your little one. Let's give them a sense of accomplishment in a job well done instead of the loss of self-esteem that I see all too often in children who need help in academics. Sometimes a one-on-one relationship with an older "grandma image" teacher can be very fruitful when the teacher thinks young.
At the Newman YMCA I set up a curriculum for the after school program and instead of having the children only play average games, I set up learning centers for math, reading and science so that they could find the joy in learning.
My teaching methods differ a bit from the RI Dept of Education curriculum in math. I do believe that students should learn why certain mathematical equations work out as the formal curriculum requires. However, I also believe that children mature at very different speeds and that some of them actually need to learn the basic mathematical facts through rote learning in order to move forward with the operations required of them. For this reason, I do teach using both methods in spite of the lack of enthusiasm in the educational community for rote learning.
The same is true of my teaching of reading. I just do not agree that phonics can be ignored and that word recognition is enough. Both methods are incorporated in my teaching to make reading a less negative experience for those students that need the method of "sounding out the word". Eventually, word recognition will come to the child, but in the meantime, I see no harm in teaching him to sound out the word. It will boost his self esteem to be able to figure it out and I find that children need successful experiences in order to really enjoy reading and feel confident.
As an undergraduate I majored in French in the Liberal Arts Program. It was a long time ago and I may not be completely fluent today. But I am well capable of teaching French I or II and would love to do so.
I minored in English as an undergraduate and have spent most of my adult life preparing reports, correspondence and other documents that were required to be completely grammatically correct so I feel I could do a good job teaching English.
I have been sewing for over forty years and have taught beginner's sewing classes in the evening at Joann's Fabric Store. I still greatly enjoy this hobby and could teach basic sewing if requested.
I returned to graduate school in 1983 and pursued the Master of Arts in Elementary Education for Certification program. I completed it in 1985 and received my M.A. degree. I did my student teaching under this program at an elementary school in Riverside, R.I. for one semester and received an excellent recommendation.
My philosophy of education in a nutshell is that "children will rise to the degree of excellence that you require of them". Some may need more individualized attention, but they will do their very best if they are treated with respect and patience.
This is the time in my life when I feel I can offer my abilities as a teacher and pursue my passion for educating young minds.

Elizabeth's Experience:

I hold a Master of Arts in Elementary Education and did my practicum teaching at Henry Barnard School in Providence, Rhode Island. My student teaching was done at Waddington School in Riverside, Rhode Island where I taught the first grade and received an excellent recommendation as a result.
My experience includes the educational programs at the U. S. Postal Service where I traveled to various elementary schools helping the students to form "Ben Franklin Stamp Clubs" and mini post offices in the "Wee Deliver" program to promote literacy. At the YMCA I set up learning stations and curriculum for the "School's Out" program.

grammar
|
As an undergraduate, I minored in English maintaining a 3.6 cumulative index in that subject. All of my term papers and reports received at least a B+ in my English courses.
During the past few years, I have been called upon to create reports at an insurance company and at the Veterans Hospital and have been successful at both.
I am able to teach correct English grammar from the elementary level up to the adult level.

phonics
|
The teaching of phonics is essential at the elementary level in order to reach an acceptable level of literacy. There are those who believe that word recognition is the way to teach, however I believe this method of teaching must be only a corollary to the essential phonetic teaching. This is actually true when teaching any age group.
Sounding out words is the only way to move ahead with building our vocabulary and phonetics is essential to do so.
I am qualified to teach phonetics to any age student.

sewing
|
Sewing is my hobby of choice although I can also teach knitting and crocheting. I have been sewing for 45 years doing alterations and making clothing from scratch.
I taught basic sewing classes at Joann's fabrics in East Providence, R.I. until that store was closed. Six students were in each class and they each brought their own sewing machines to class. I taught them how to buy fabric, cut out a pattern and use their machines to make an item for themselves or their children to wear. I prefer that my students be at least 10 years of age and I mainly teach adults.
I have created numerous children's designs which I have sold privately and on EBay.

study skills
|
In my own experience of 19 years of education, I have been able to establish my own method of studying. Some of it is by rote; most of it is by outlining chapters and data to be learned so that the information will come back to the student as he/she recalls the main headings of the outline.
Note-taking is really an art and can be taught so that the student can type or write only the essentials of the subject once he/she is taught how to get to the crux of the problem.
Study skills in math involves reasoning at the upper levels and repetition at the lower levels. I do not believe that students under the mental age of 8 are generally cognitively mature enough to reason out the mathematical process. This is why I feel so many students in the early grades are struggling with the new math.
