Amir's Experience:
ear training
|
Ear training is something I utilize and put to practice everyday.
As a student, I have taken two courses on it (intermediate and advanced) and have done exceedingly well in them. I have done countless ear training exercises for various music classes as well. As an arranger for my contemporary a cappella singing group for which I am the Music Director, I use ear training to arrange and teach the songs to the group. Typically, I listen to a song, take the parts I hear and write them down to be sung by various voice parts, using and applying basic and advanced ear training skills. As an enthusiast, I enjoy taking what I hear and writing it out or discovering how the melodies and harmonies are constructed on the piano and various instruments.
Ear training is a discipline that I have applied and experienced inside and out.

general music
|
My passion for music and music education is quintessential to my character. I have been a student of music all of my life. Academically speaking, I began my musical education in 2003 and have enjoyed learning and applying various musical skills and pieces of knowledge. I have been in various musical singing groups since 2001, ranging from chamber music to contemporary. I have been Assistant Music Director for two years and Music Director for one year for my a cappella group and have learned and taught a lot about music in that time. I am a Music major at Boston College with an emphasis on theory and composition. Having taken a wide variety of music classes from music history courses to music theory, from composition seminars to ethnomusicology, and from ear training to singing singing. Not only have I done well in these courses, but I have enjoyed tutoring students in an inclusive selection of those courses. I plan to attain my Ph.D. in Composition and be a professor of theory and composition at the collegiate level and compose on the side as well. Music and music education are fundamentally important to me, and I love sharing my passion and knowledge with others.

music history
|
Simply put, music is a part of my history and my future. I have studied music in its various facets for years and through various means. As a student I have taken many music history courses: Medieval and Renaissance music, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century, Musics of America, and Musics of the World. I have also encountered various topics of music history in other courses as well. Having tutored many friends and students in music history, I feel that I would be able to guide and educate anyone in music history issues and concerns.

music theory
|
To be honest, I am a music theory geek. I love it. As a student, I have taken various music theory courses and achieved a 4.0 grade point average in those courses: Fundamentals of Music Theory, Harmony, Chromatic Harmony, and Counterpoint. More over, I have taken various other theory related and theory heavy courses, ranging from 20th Century Music to Ear Training and Sight Singing. I have tutored countless friends and students in all levels of music theory courses.
As a Music Director and arranger of music, I have directly applied my music theory knowledge and skills into educating my a cappella group with my complex arrangements and my unique teaching and directing style. I relate abstract music theory to relevant and accessible material to illuminate why and how things work. As an enthusiast and lover of music and music theory, I enjoy applying that theory when it comes to songwriting. Also, I combine my music theory background with my ear training and sight singing skills to compose, sing, and transcribe various musical works.
I have learned music theory, taught it, loved it, used it, shared it, and applied it to various facets of my own life.

sight singing
|
Music is a significant and meaningful part of my life, academically and holistically. More specifically, sight singing is very important to me as well. I have taken two sight singing courses (intermediate and advanced) at the collegiate level and have practiced and applied sight singing through various singing groups and choirs since 2001. Moreover, my role as Assistant Music Director and also Music Director and arranger of my contemporary a cappella singing group has allowed me hands-on experience in sight singing and the platform from which to be able to teach and share various sight singing skills and exercises. I utilize sight singing skills everyday in my own music education and enjoy sharing that with others. Sight singing can be just as fun and rewarding as it is challenging: I like to see to that.
