About
Michelle: |
I am a recent gradute from Gustavus with a degree in Education. I am very passionate about teaching a variety of subjects. I have a diverse background in teaching for someone my age. I have taught in a wide range of settings. I have wonderful communication skills and I am highly successful at teaching, especially in a one-on-one setting. I make teaching fun and difficult so that my students learn a lot and enjoy education as much as I do. I am flexible but also make sure that certain expectations are clear. I like to be organized, dependable, and well-thought out because that is what I hope to instill in my students. |

ESL/ESOL
I just returned from a 5-month trip in Ecuador where I was teaching English at a private school. I have a degree in education and I have been learning Spanish for many years so I understand and appreciate the value in learning a second language. I taught a range of levels at the English school I was teaching at, I volunteer taught a university course, and I tutored several students. These experiences gave me a lot of knowledge about how to teach English. I also collected many resources to be used in an ESL setting. I believe it's important to use a variety of teaching methods when teaching ESL. I create a balance in my lessons that include verbal, grammar, and cultural focuses. I enjoy learning new languages so I like to create an enjoyable environment for my students to learn English as well.

golf
I have been playing golf for most of my life. I started taking lessons when I was 11 years old. I played for my high school team and for one year at my college. Golf is an activity that I really enjoy, but it is also a skill that I have had to work hard at. I have taking lessons over the years and had to practice extensively to develop the knowledge and muscle memory to be successful. I, therefore, understand the need and value in putting forth effort toward becoming a good golfer. Golf is something I enjoy as a personal skill to continually improve, and as a social activity with friends and family. I think it is a wonderful activity for many people to enjoy. I would enjoy teaching this activity to anyone who genuinely wants to learn.

study skills
I have always enjoyed learning, and I therefore believe that good study skills are an important part of the learning process. In high school I took a variety of AP courses and was challenged to develop good study habits. In college this challenge was only furthered with my typical overloaded semesters. As a teacher myself and a lifelong student, I believe it makes a big difference to have systems and skills that guide a person's studying. My philosophy is that most people can master just about any knowledge that is out there, but it depends on the efficiency and dedication you put toward it. Having a plan with which to tackle that knowledge can allow a person to be successful or not.
