My name is Shira and I am a rising Junior at Yale University. I have an extensive background tutoring students ages 6 to 60! I have tutored everything from math, to foreign language, to study skills and am excited to motivate my students and to make learning as fun as possible. I am working as a teacher at the Head Royce School this summer and am looking to help more students in the afternoons/evenings or on the weekends.   As a former Kindergarten teacher in an after school language program and an experienced elementary school tutor I have extensive experience helping young children reach their full potential in every area of the academic arena. I have a creative and extremely friendly demeanor that allows young students to feel comfortable working with me and excited to learn from me as we make homework a more enjoyable experience! I have had special training to help young children with reading, writing, and note taking skills.

  I have worked extensively with Kindergarten age children who were learning to read and write in English after spending their first few years speaking Spanish i the home. I have also partaken in language exchange programs where I learned Fante Twi (conversationally) while helping my Ghanian tutor with her conversational English skills. I have formal experience teaching Hebrew and Spanish to children and adults, but feel that I can easily apply those teaching skills to my native language to help my students become proficient and confident English language speakers. I am extremely patient and easy to work with and look forward to helping my students succeed.

  People often ask how it is that I can end up at Yale. The answer is very simple: study skills. When to study, how to study, and what tools one needs to study are all things that can be taught and I have worked tirelessly throughout the past five years to help middle, high school, and college age students reach their full potentials in academia by improving their study habits. Studying is like a sport that must be practiced, and I am an excited coach, read and able to help you, as a student, succeed in your classes, with as little stress as possible. I have worked with students with ADD/ADHD, as well as Anxiety Disorder and can help set up Individual Study Plans to help you succeed.

  As a kindergarten teacher and former camp counselor I taught improvisational theater as well as character/monologue work to elementary and middle school age students. And as an actress since the age of 4, who has been through several acting classes and in countless theatrical productions (both University and at the Long Wharf Theater), as well as in several commercials, I feel confident in my abilities to help my students grow in their theatrical endeavors. I have also directed several short plays for the Princeton Theater Festival and the Yale Dramat and have guided undergraduate and graduate students as they grow as actors.
