About Lindsey:

I am a very enthusiastic young professional with a zest for teaching!

I have a strong educational background and an eclectic range of subjects I love to teach.

I am a graduate of the University of Oregon, where I excelled in my Japanese, Asian Studies and Music degrees. During my years in Eugene, I was an oft requested tutor with the American English Institute, where I had the pleasure of working with international students from a variety of countries. I returned from teaching English abroad in Japan last fall, where I was stationed at three high schools in northern Japan. I also studied during college at Japan's premier college, Waseda, in Tokyo.

I also have 16 years of experience with violin. I have played with many different kinds of groups, though I am first and foremost classically trained. I have coached, taught and held leadership positions in groups during college. I am thrilled to help others develop their musical skills!

If water is more your style, I was a certified swim and diving instructor with Portland Parks and Recreation for 6 years and love teaching classes from infants to adults.

Thank you for your consideration!

More On Lindsey's Subjects:

  • ESL/ESOL

During college I was employed with the American English Institute, where I had the pleasure of working with international exchange students from a variety of different countries. I worked with them individually, as a group and in the classroom. I helped all of my students with understanding their coursework, campus life, and American culture in general. My work with these students was very rewarding and led me to apply to teach in Japan after graduation. I taught at three northern Japanese high schools for one year, in addition to designing and leading community English Communication classes. I worked with over 900 students and enjoyed every minute! These students in particular where interested in American culture and how to casually friend an English-speaking person. These lessons tended to be more interactive and fun, designed for the younger age set. I have volunteer experience at an elementary school in the Portland Public School system, assisting 4th grade teachers with their ESL students in the classroom. I was able to assist Somali students who where having their very first classroom experience. It was my job to make them feel comfortable, to design fun activities to help them acclimate to their new environment and curious classmates. ESL is a subject I have a passion for. I will continue pursuing these studies at a graduate school from June 2009. It is important that I address the goals and aspirations of each student on an individual basis. Do they need help at the grocery store? Do they need to know classroom terminology? Do they primarily want to meet other English-speaking people? I look forward to working with you!

  • general music

When I was in 4th grade a group of classical musicians came to our school to perform for us. The violinist received a rose afterwards, and my 10-year-old self said "ah-HAH!" Sixteen years later, I am happy to say my violin has allowed me to travel to Japan, the UK and all over the United States. I performed at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, OR when I was eighteen and won several local competitions. I am classically trained, though love to experiment with other genres. My favorite music to perform is chamber music, and I have experience coaching small chamber ensembles. I have had students throughout the years, though because I went away for college, these were mainly summer jobs. I have taught aural skills, theory and basic keyboarding at Warner Pacific College's summer camp. I have also completed a minor in music from the University of Oregon. I'm happy to help you on your musical journey!

  • Japanese

I started studying Japanese in high school, and opted to take coursework at the local community college for more of a challenge. I graduated with honors in college with a dual degree in Asian Studies and Japanese Language, and studied abroad at Japan's premier university, Waseda, in Tokyo. After graduating college, I participated in the JET Programme, teaching English at three high schools in northern Miyagi Prefecture. I am happy to help you with your studies in Japanese, and look forward to helping you learn more about Japanese culture!

  • swimming

I was employed for 5 years each summer with Portland Parks and Recreation as a swimming and diving instructor. I also assisted with Jr. Swim Team during the summer. I have taught infant classes through adult classes, at every level. In Portland, I have taught at Wilson, PCC, and Dishman pools. If you'd like to improve your swim team skills, or simply learn basic water safety, I'm happy to help!

  • violin

I have sixteen years of violin under my belt, and look forward to many more! I am classically trained and was on the competition circuit during high school. I have held many leadership positions in the groups I have played in. I have been concertmaster, section leader and coach. I received a scholarship to pursue violin performance at the University of Oregon, and was recognized as an "Academic All-Star in Music" for Multnomah County during high school. I also received my youth orchestra's presidential scholarship before graduating. My favorite composers are Brahms, Shostakovitch, and Sarasate. I enjoy performing in quartets and other small chamber ensembles the most. I hope to work with you!
