My name is Carm and I am a native of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., with many years of experience in the field of TESOL/TEFL instruction to adults and children, teacher professional development, curriculum development and program administration. I hold a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults (CELTA) from the University of Cambridge. I have been involved in TESOL/TEFL since 1985. I have taught in university, community college, community-based and private sector programs; and have lived and worked in Japan and Australia. I have extensive foreign travel experience in Southeast Asia and Latin America. While living and working in Australia, I conducted independent research into second language acquisition by an indigenous tribe in far northwestern Australia.Most recently, I’ve been working as a teacher/tutor for a private language school and teaching workplace ESL for a food manufacturing company in Chicago, IL. I also teach emerging ESL teachers about teaching ESL through a TEFL certificate program widely recognized throughout the world.My own professional development has included such areas as citizenship preparation, diversity in the adult education/ESL classroom, ESL teaching methods and assessment, best practices in teaching reading to LEP adults, and administering and scoring standardized tests utilized in measuring learner progress towards language acquisition. I lived and worked in Japan from 1988-95. While there, I taught volunteer trainees ESP prior to their dispatch to developing countries by the Japanese government organization overseeing technical assistance to developing countries.At two top-tier Japanese universities, I taught students Advanced Writing, Beginning and Intermediate EFL, and Academic English to prepare them for study abroad in American, Australian and British universities and colleges. I have been involved in TESOL/TEFL since 1985. I have taught in university, community college, community-based and private sector programs; and have lived and worked in Japan and Australia. I have extensive foreign travel experience. While living and working in Australia, I conducted independent research into second language acquisition by one particular indigenous tribe in far northwestern Australia.
Most recently, I’ve been working as a teacher/tutor for a private language school and teaching workplace ESL for a food manufacturing company in Chicago, IL. I have extensive experience teaching ESL to adults from all over the world. I also teach emerging teachers how to teach English as a Foreign Language, through a certificate program widely recognized throughout the world.
In May 2006, I was recognized for my commitment and dedication while participating in the Illinois ESL Content Standards Field Test Process for Adult Education and Family Literacy under the auspices of the Illinois Community College Board.
My own professional development has included such areas as citizenship preparation, diversity in the adult education/ESL classroom, ESL teaching methods and assessment, best practices in teaching reading to Limited English Proficient adults, and administering and scoring standardized tests utilized in measuring learner progress towards language acquisition and program outcomes.
I lived and worked in Japan from 1988-95. While there, I taught volunteer trainees ESP prior to their dispatch to developing countries by the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV). At two Japanese universities, I taught students Academic English to prepare college students for study abroad in American, Australian and British universities and colleges. I also taught Business English at some of Japan’s most prestigious corporations such as Fujitsu, Sumitomo, Dentsu, and Nippon Steel Chemical, to name a few.

My name is Carmine and I have been tutoring adult students in TOEFL since October 2007. I am available to assist you with listening, structure and grammar, reading, and writing essays. I am especially interested in tutoring foreign nurses or doctors for the TOEFL, in addition to students seeking admission into Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degree programs in the United States. I have a developed sixteen week curriculum for TOEFL preparation, for those students who need to start at the beginning.
