About Sarah:

**Please note: due to my oral exams this semester, between now and Nov. 17th, I am only taking students who need occasional help, or 1-2 hours per week. After Nov. 17th, I will be able to tutor those who need consistent instruction. Thank you for understanding. -----------------------------------------------------------I am a PhD candidate in English literature and composition. During the academic year I teach college level English courses and tutor at Fordham University. In addition to my six years of teaching and tutoring college students, I have worked with high school students at all levels, many ESL students, and adults. I can help you with your writing--everything from coming up with an idea, to developing your structure, to executing your argument, to refining your voice, to fixing pesky grammar problems. I can tutor writing in any subject, and have a lot of experience with ESL/EFL writing issues. I am also available to help you with reading and understanding literature. Being able to critically think about a novel, play, or poem will give you an edge in the classroom. We can talk through the text to unlock those "secrets" held in images, metaphors, and tone. I look forward to helping you feel more confident in your ability to express yourself both in class discussions and through your writing. I am based in Brooklyn but can travel to all five boroughs as long as I am close to the subway or a bus.

More On Sarah's Subjects:

  • ESL/ESOL

My experience with ESL students is through teaching at a school with a large ESL population. While I am not an official ESL instructor, I know what you need to succeed in humanities classes like English, History, Philosophy, and Art History. I can help you with your reading comprehension, your writing (in any subject), and help you develop skills to be able to participate more confidently in your classes. As a college instructor, I am familiar with the problems ESL students face in terms of getting through required courses without mastering the material. I believe it is your right to learn the subject matter in classes for which you are most likely paying a great deal, and I am eager to help you. I am happy to work with any age at any level and in most subjects.

  • grammar

An important part of clearly written work is sound use of grammar and for many students, this causes anxiety. Misplaced Modifiers? Comma Splices? Faulty Parallelism? These grammar "mistakes" sound threatening and can scare you into avoiding learning how to fix them. As a writing teacher, I believe that grammar can and should be integrated into your tutoring session without the use of boring drills and worksheets. I use your own writing to teach you grammar skills so that you develop control over how you use language. More importantly, when you work the rules of grammar into your own writing, you will begin to see and revise your own weaknesses in logic and content; you will begin to able to make clear your progression from one point to the next; you will see less of your teacher's red pen and more of his or her praise at your ability to persuade and compel your audience. I have had much success with students at all levels of writing proficiency who conquered fears about grammar and not only did better in their school work but passed high school state exams, teaching credential exams, and social work certification exams. I look forward to helping you succeed too! Credentials: MA, PhD candidate, Six years teaching composition and rhetoric skills at Boston College, Wheelock College, Emmanuel College, Mount Ida College, and Fordham University.

Student Feedback:

  • First Day

Today was my first tutorial with Sarah. I found her to be knowledgeable, open, and very interested in the process of researching, writing, and critical thinking. It was easy to tell that she really enjoys what she does, and this made it a pleasure to work with her. I look forward to studying with Sarah over the couple of months, and I am confident that in doing so, I will more than ready for my graduate studies this coming fall.
