Karen's Experience:
drawing
I minored in art in college and have continued to study this craft. I illustrated the children's book I had published in 1996. Because this is a right-brain activity, everyone can learn to draw. This includes shading, refining, perspective, subject matter, and tools needed.

grammar
Grammar credentials: this is my undergrad minor; Master's Degree thesis is a published book; am a published author of numerous books and articles; have taught English grammar for 36 years. I have several "tricks and tips" to make the learning of grammar easy and enjoyable! A former student, Steve Ku, said recently, "I have received several promotions in my company because I took 3 years of English from Mrs. Milligan!" Allow me to take the mystery out of our English language.

phonics
Phonics is the learning of Phonemes--the sounds of letters and their unique combinations, along with learning spelling. I have tutored in this area for over 20 years. I use mnemonics (pictures) to help students learn each letter and combinations of letters. I know well the SRA Direct Instruction Model, The Stevenson Language Skills Program, The Susan Barton Language and Spelling program based on the Orton-Gillingham method. Phonics skills need to be tailored to each individual student through a basic placement test and than we can set up a program to help with specific trouble areas.

sewing
Learning to sew at the age of 10, I have been sewing for 48 years. Sewing skirts with zippers and waistbands, blouses, lined jackets, lined winter coats, curtains, furniture slip covers, home decor, and business suits are a strong suite. I can teach you the tools you'll need, how to measure and fit a pattern to yourself, how to choose proper fabric, and the construction of an article of clothing.

special needs
Special Needs would include a student who needs help in reading, decoding, comprehension skills, and spelling because he/she has mild to severe Dyslexia. The use of The Stevenson Language Skills Program and the use of movable letters will aid in these areas. I received my certificate to teach the student with Dyslexia from Direct Learning Ltd., London, England and the University of New York, representing 100 hours of study.

theatre
My major in college was Speech Education which included many classes in theatre. Preparation for my senior recital culminated in performing a one-person drama for an hour-long performance. Part of work for my Master's Degree included classes in theatre. I have directed plays for 25 years, written 6 plays, judge the IACS Speech & Drama contests in Illinois each year for the past 10 years. I currently direct all the drama performances at my church.
