About
James: |
I am a current senior at Harvard College and am very interested in helping you learn! I will be spending the summer in Los Angeles and hope to hear from students looking for a dedicated, patient, challenging tutor in key academic areas.
During my time at Harvard, I have developed skills in all of the areas requisite for an excellent, humanities-based tutoring experience. Relevant experience includes:
- Additional teaching experience: SAT tutoring for underprivileged students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School; co-teaching of freshman honors English class as a senior in high school
- Coursework at Harvard: Courses in nearly all of the liberal arts, including expository writing, moral reasoning, Spanish and Italian languages and literature, western music, British literature, physics, economics, history of science, and Korean history
I look forward to hearing from you! |

James's Experience:
piano
|
I have played the piano since the age of six, and received ten years of formal training beginning in the second grade. I have also played the pipe organ (a similar keyboard instrument) for over seven years, with four years of formal instruction during high school.
Over the past fourteen years, I have performed in numerous recitals and competitions for both instruments, with a Superior rating in four consecutive festivals of the National Federation of Music Clubs (2002-2005) and scores of 14 out of 15 (Level 7, 2002), 14 (Level 9, 2003), and 15 (Level 10, 2004) in the Associated Piano Teachers Competition, both taking place in Wisconsin.
Since coming to Harvard, I have accompanied numerous recitalists and participated in several small concerts on both instruments, and am currently the President of the Harvard Organ Society. I have privately taught piano lessons to beginning students and am comfortable teaching at the beginning and intermediate levels.

proofreading
|
As my résumé indicates, I have a noteworthy educational background in languages, literature, and composition and occupational experience in policy writing and organizational administration.
My coursework in comparative literature and Italian language and literature heavily emphasizes the importance of clarity and tight construction in composition, and fosters reading skills that allow me to quickly get at the “gist” of a lengthy text and devise several arguments based on this key content. These skills were directly responsible for the successful adoption of a proposal I recently drafted to the Wisconsin State Department of Health and Family Services on behalf of one of my employers. As a senior in high school, I was responsible for co-teaching the freshman Honors English class, which focused heavily on essay writing, and I have also tutored in the English and compositional portions of the SAT while studying at Harvard.
On an occupational level, I have spent multiple summers working directly for the CEO of a mid-sized healthcare conglomerate in Milwaukee, WI, where my position as a procedural analyst gave me the opportunity to experience how writing policy leads directly to clarity, precision, and substantial developments in the efficiency of a system. During my time as a leader of several Harvard student organizations, including two with 501(c)(3) status (one of which is also incorporated in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts), I also spent a great deal of time leading the revision of the legal documents by which we operate, another experience that demonstrated the importance of strength and concision in writing.
On the side, I have spent the last year revising essays and other writing samples of two Korean international students. One is currently a master’s degree candidate at the Harvard Divinity School, and the other is now entering the second year of a doctoral program at the University of Southern California. Both have been very pleased with my revisions over the past year, and in the process I have grown accustomed to standard errors that result from having learned Korean prior to learning English.
As you can see, I have been proofreading and editing documents since early high school and am equipped with the skills to analyze your compositions and help you evaluate your own!
