About
Lauren: |
|
I love learning and have the education to prove it!! I graduated from the Univ. of Massachusetts (major: biology) and from Emerson College (major: communication studies). My random education include a massage certification and current enrollment in studio arts in Dallas County Community College system. Of course, there was the paralegal course I completed and the one year of law school (dont' advise it) I thought I needed to go to. I have usually been on the Dean's List and have worked part-time while in school.
I am presently about to become a tutor in English at my local community college as well as a mentor. I think my style could be called organized, but somewhat fluid. If you don't want to work hard, I won't be the right person for you. But I am totally willing to help you and "think outside the box" to help you find solutions to your academic problems. Shortcuts can be all right, but I have tolerance for cheaters !! |

Lauren's Experience:
drawing
|
I am an artist. I have scholastically completed Drawing I, Drawing II and Figure Drawing. I have also completed a course in Photoshop/Digital Art to create or manipulate drawings I have made.
My work has been very good, and I received all A's. I have also won several awards for my drawings, which later became paintings.
I came to art much later than the average student, so I know what it is like to begin and not know how to start.
Art is a subject where you are graded against yourself. How much have you improved during the semester? How hard have you tried? You may not be the best artist in your class, but if you are not squandering your time and talents you can achieve great things. I have seen artists more talented than I who seldom went to class or finished projects.

grammar
|
I believe grammar is important. Today with "computer-speak" there are many shortcuts to words and phrases; this can be acceptable if the writing is in an informal situation. Once a business letter or proposal needs to be written, the writer needs to use proper language as used by the business community. That includes correct spelling and punctuation, subject and verb agreement, no dangling participles, etc.
I have qualified to tutor English, reading, vocabulary and writing. Grammar is a part of all of these subjects and I would therefore be an excellent grammar tutor.
I have personally written over 100 English and research papers for college and graduate school. I received mostly A's on these papers, with only an occasional B or B+. I read the papers of fellow students and edited for grammar.
Professionally, I have edited a book on politics and how to "get out the vote." I have also written several brochures and newsletter articles.

study skills
|
Good study skills are universal, yet techniques to study and learn should be personalized. Everyone learns differently, and one method does not fit all. You can use various study aids such as making your own flash cards, studying with a partner, or working with a tutor to achieve your scholastic goals
Organization and study environment are key. Because I am very organized, I have been able to work over 30 hrs./wk. in a law firm while completing my master's degree. I used time commuting on a subway to study. I NEVER pulled an all-nighter because I outlined, read, discussed the class with fellow students, and did the work.
I have assisted classmates in prepping for exams. shown them how to write and edit as well as giving them suggestions on how to set up good study habits. My GPA was 3.7 in graduate school and 3.6 as an undergrad.
