About
Michelle: |
Currently I own and operated a small, private studio in Springfield which has about thirty students. My studdents play in festivals, exams and competitions, as well as just playing for fun.
I have played the piano since I was ten years old, attending Duke Ellington School the Arts for high school and moving on to Radford University. There, I majored in Music Composition. I have been teaching since I graduated and currently have a studio in Springfield.
I can teach piano or the recorder, along with Music Theory, Music Composition, and Songwriting. I can help student's prepare for college courses or help them succeed in current classes. My experience in this area includes successfully taking AP exams in Music Theory and History. I can also prepare students for national exams such as ABRSM. |

music history
|
I took AP Music History in high school along with taking classes in college. I have studied the history of music from it's beginnings (Gregorian Chant, Motets) all they way up to the present day.
I know the musical periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemperary) along with many composers and the periods they belong to.
Baroque - Bach, Scarlatti
Classical - Mozart, Beethoven
Romantic - Chopin, Schuman
Contemperary - Debussy, Ravel
I have also studied ragtime and Jazz, which includes composers like Scott Koplin or Duke Ellington.

music theory
|
I have studied music theory all through high school (including AP Music Theory) and college. Chords, inversions, rhthyms, key signatures, time signatures, modes, modulations, intervals, ect.
I have analyzed contless songs, including sonatinas, symphonies, piano solos and inventions. Music Theory is a necessity for Composers, you can't write well with that knowledge.
|
piano
|
I have taken piano for over fifteen years. My senior high school recital included:
Prelude in C# Minor - Rachmaninoff
Toccata - Khatchuturian
Nocturne in E-Flat - Chopin
Other pieces I have played, include Maple Leaf Rag, The Entertainer,Moonlight Sonata, Fur Elise (I played in Middle School.)
I have been teaching for over five years and love every minute of it. I am currently working on my own piano method curriculum.

songwriting
|
Music theory is the back-bone of all music writing and I have had tons of it. To have a good song, you need a good melody, a chord progression that makes sense and sounds nice, and a great lyrics.
I have written pop, rock, and even taken a stab at musicals.
