 About Jessica:
My name is Jessica, and I have a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Columbia University in New York City. I currently teach the First Certificate in English course at the EF International Language School. I am a painter who loves to read, play my guitar, and teach. My mother is an English teacher, and I believe I inherited a knack for it. While in college, I taught art to adults with mental illness, a job I continued after graduating and moving to New Orleans. After relocating to San Diego due to Hurricane Katrina, I began teaching art to children ages 3-14, so I have a broad range of teaching experience in terms of the age of my students. My background in both studio art and art history makes me well-qualified to teach these subjects, and in my past experience, I have often taught them in conjunction. This past October, I received my CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) at the International House of San Diego. Through this training, I solidified my knowledge of grammar and writing skills and have become adept at teaching these subjects to my students. This training has enabled me to confidently teach English grammar and writing to both native and non-native English speakers. Through working with mentally ill adults and young children, I have become a very patient teacher. Feedback from my colleagues in the CELTA course often mentioned this trait as well. I try to be casual with my students (and therefore not intimidating) while still maintaining a confident, professional manner. I am very organized, and always have a clear aim when I embark on a lesson. If I am working with a student repeatedly, I have overall goals and try to create lessons that cohesively work toward achieving these goals. I am also very perceptive and am therefore attentive to each individual student's needs and can adjust my teaching style accordingly. I think this flexibility was developed when I was teaching mentally ill adults and solidified while completing my CELTA certification.

Learn More About Jessica's Experience:
drawing
I graduated from Columbia University in NYC with a degree in Studio Art. The degree required proficiency in an upper level drawing course and a thesis project and show in my senior year of study. While I was in school, I taught art for two years to mentally ill adults at a non-profit organization. After graduating, I continued this work in New Orleans. When I moved to California, I again taught art to children ages 3-14, so I have a great deal of experience not only in taking drawing classes, but also in teaching drawing as well. I have exhibited my work in galleries in New York, New Orleans, and here in San Diego.
ESL/ESOL
In October of this year, I completed a course to receive my CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) at the International House in San Diego. I did very well in the course. The course is an intensive 4-week program (M-F, 8-6) that trains its students to teach ESL to both lower-level and upper-level non-native English speakers. It includes four written assignments, 7 hours of assessed teaching to actual students at the International House, and 6 hours of observation of experienced teachers, as well as training sessions of course. I feel very confident teaching ESL to a variety of non-native English speakers after completing this course.
grammar
First of all, my mother is an English teacher, so growing up correct grammar was pounded into my head. In addition, I have recently completed my CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) certification, which solidified my knowledge of English grammar. I had to become well versed in verb tenses, comparatives, superlatives, conditionals, you name it, in order to effectively communicate these rules to my students who were trying to learn English. Most of my students were from Asian countries, which made it even more vital that I knew my grammar backwards and forwards because their native languages are so different from English.
proofreading
While living in New Orleans from 2004-2005, I worked for a non-profit called The Prometheus Group. One of my main responsibilities was proof reading grant proposals before they were submitted. Through this experience, I have become very comfortable with proof reading. My solid knowledge of English grammar (developed through my CELTA certification) and strong background in writing also help make me a great proof reader. I have actually been proof reading since I was a teenager, because my father is a writer, and he always has me edit his texts. It also doesn't hurt that my mother is an English teacher and has been correcting my grammar since the day I was born.
