About Kevin:

Hello. My name is Kevin. The guitar is my passion and I have dedicating myself to this discipline for the majority of my life. I am pleased to have this opportunity to share with you my knowledge and passion for the guitar. Since graduating the University of Florida in 2001 with a degree in English, I have developed my skill as a musician around the country, playing in fingerstyle/ ragtime style to people all over the country and providing color and background to many independent albums. Then, in order to further my knowledge of the instrument, I attended and recently graduated the well respected Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix, Arizona, and became a certified Luthier (builder of stringed instruments). Now, as I have settled, I have begun teaching and absolutely adore it. As a teacher I am very encouraging and, I am told, patient and perceptive to the needs of my students. I take great pride in my work and I am certain I can provide my students with an understanding of the guitar at any level. I hope you find the same joy in learning that I find in teaching. Thank you. I look forward to working with you.

More On Kevin's Subjects:

  • guitar

It is with this short letter that I would like to request to be deemed qualified to tutor under the subject of guitar instruction. I hope these words provide enough detail of my experience and real world credentials to grant me a approval in the subject. My experience with the guitar and music began fourteen years ago when, while still attending high school, I began taking piano lessons while teaching myself guitar. Although my aptitude for piano moved much slower than guitar, through my piano instruction, I became very interested in music theory and composition and picked up quickly on those disciplines, using them to enhance my guitar playing ability. As I progressed my interest focused on the guitar solely and through the following years I found, with my theory and composition knowledge from piano, that my guitar playing capabilites exceeded even my own expectations. It was not long until I started using my ability to play guitar for extra money, working in various roles such as a back-up guitarist for local singers, a house band member for a theatre, playing on other musician's demo records as well as occasionely playing my own gigs with my own compositions. The next step in my development began with my goal to focus my skills and play a style of music known as American Primitive - a demanding acoustic style format played fingerstyle in ragtime composition, harkening back to the old blues/jazz tradition of early-twentieth century. I succeeded in this goal and recorded my own compositions on a small record lable in this style. After this accomplishment, I traveled to a few western cities, playing American Primitive music to audiences in small coffee shops and wine bars. While out west I extended my knowledge of guitar and attended the Roberto Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix, Arizona, furthering my passion to fully appreciate and understand the guitar as an instrument by becoming a certified luthier, builder of stringed instruments. Upon returning from school back to the south, I found myself quite unexpectedly with a handful of guitar students. With this new venture I found another avenue to spread my passion for guitar playing. My students are learning, having fun and with them I am enjoying the guitar again in ways I have not felt years. My new goal is to focus on spreading the gift of guitar to others at any level so that they may find the joy that I have from guitar playing over the years. I would like to end my request by thanking you for this oppurtunity to help me achieve this goal. I feel confident I can tutor all students from the beginner to even the more experienced player who would just like a different "take" on the instrument. It is my hope that in the future we may spread the gift of music to many through teaching. I thank your again for your consideration. Kevin Kerins

Student Feedback:

  • Outstanding with my 12-year-old

Kevin's done a great job with my beginner son, especially in keeping his interest from waning (always a concern, with as big an investment as this is). He's also been very flexible with regard to schedules and working with us to get the most out of the lessons. I recommend him highly.
