I have had several years of experience tutoring students ages 5 through 21. I volunteered for four years with elementary school students developing reading and writing skills, as well as with science, environmental literacy, and nutrition. In addition, I worked as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant at Michigan State University for Integrated Studies in Biology (ISB) 202 for three years. ISB 202 is a university required science course designed for non-science majors, in which students learn basic biological concepts and writing skills. As an undergraduate TA, I worked with students outside of class on an individual basis and in small groups, in addition to working in the large lecture setting of the classroom. I have also worked with individual students on developing their rhetoric and writing skills.
I really enjoy working with students. It is very important to me that each student comprehends the concepts of the subject matter so that s/he develops the skills to eventually work without assistance. Not all students learn in the same way, and I will present the material in the method most beneficial to each individual student. Never will I simply give the answer to the student, but will work to help him/her understand the subject and concepts. In the case of writing, organization, proof reading, and study skills, I will provide the student with techniques to use in future work.
I graduated from the Honors College at Michigan State University (MSU), and earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and Applications, and a Bachelor of Arts in English with a creative writing specialization, both with honors. I received the Dean’s Award from the College of Arts and Letters, and the Outstanding Senior Award. I worked on a graduate qualitative research project on the recycling behaviors of faculty, staff and students at MSU, with a paper pending publication. I currently work for the University of Texas at Austin.
