About Carlie:

Greetings!

I'm excited to help your child grow and learn. I really care a lot about children and my focus is on what CAN be done and then I scaffold the new learning through creative and challenging experiences, practice and FUN!

I have a wide range of educational experiences. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching multiple subjects for pre-k through 8th grade students. I also have a certification to teach English as a Second or Other Language; I currently work in this field and I taught this subject while living abroad in South Korea.

I especially enjoy working with special needs students. I've been working with a girl that has Downs Syndrome for over a year now on a wide variety of subjects as well as physical fitness. I am able to modify and adapt lessons/sessions according to each individual and their difference/preferences for learning.

I am very eager and excited to get to know you and your family more. Please contact me!

More On Carlie's Subjects:

  • elementary (k-6th)

I have a Master of Arts in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College, Portland, OR. I also have a teaching certificate from the state of Oregon that allows me to teach in self-contained classrooms of children from pre-k through 8th grade. I have worked with children for almost 20 years between baby-sitting, nannying, being an Assistant at an elementary school and now as a teacher in the Hillsboro School District.

  • ESL/ESOL

After earning my MAT from Lewis and Clark College I then went on to earn my ESOL endorsement which stands for English Speakers of Other Languages. This teaching credential as well as my initial teaching license are reflected on my state license that I could provide you of a copy with. I currently teach in this field at the moment and I have also taught for over a year while living abroad in South Korea.

  • grammar

While earning my ESOL endorsement the study was focused on grammar and linguistics (among other aspects) specifically in relation to non-native English speakers. Near the end of my coursework I took the Praxis ESOL test, where grammar was heavily weighted on it and I passed with more than sufficient points. I could provide you a copy of the test scores for this too.

  • phonics

Throughout my training at Lewis and Clark College for my MAT we focused heavily on the reading/writing processes. We one aspect of reading was the theory of phonics. Phonics is a component of reading/writing that is often recognized and used to help early readers find the order and patterns within the language to help them be successful. I used this technique when working with an early reader over the summer and I was able to teach her strategies to use within this as well as to add other ones.

  • special needs

My training at Lewis and Clark College had major threads throughout out coursework on how to differentiate coursework for a variety of different needs and abilities in class. In addition, for the 14 months I have been an independent contractor for Mentor Oregon where I work with a special needs young adult. She has Downs Syndrome I have worked with her in the following areas: reading, math, speech, weight-lifting, social skills, living skills, problem solving skills and much more. I am very close with the family and Mentor Oregon often passes my name on to work with additional clients.
