elementary (k-6th) I have extensive tutoring experience in this area, tutoring children in all elementary-level subjects throughout my high school years, on a one-on-one basis as well as on a small group basis. I have also volunteered as a tutor/mentor for elementary-level students at the Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood when I was in college and worked as an after-school tutor and care-taker at Serrania Elementary School when I was in junior high. ESL/ESOL As an immigrant who came to the States without knowing a word of English, I believe I can relate quite well with ESL students. The benefit of being so young upon our arrival, unfortunately, did not grace the rest of my family; I remember helping my significantly older brothers with their English homework and constantly correcting my parents. I realize that in my geographical area, most ESL students are Spanish-speaking and an ideal tutor would be fluent in their native tongue - and I am not. But I am fluent in Hebrew (there are many Israelis in Los Angeles, as well) and if a student does not require fluency in their native language from their tutor, rather just patience, a love and knowledge for the English language, and teaching skills, then I am a prime candidate for such a position. grammar Of all the fascinating features of the English language, grammar is my favorite. I've always had a knack for it; for some reason, I was just able to grasp how a sentence or word is supposed to sound that I couldn't even imagine it any other way. The way grammatically correct sentences gracefully flowed from my first English books embedded in me an appreciation for the complex, yet, simply beautiful rules of the language. The first few months of learning English as a child were filled with new ways of using my tongue: strange sounds and syllables, and novel ideas and rules of how to use them correctly. I just absorbed it all, as children do, and it flourished in my mind in such an easy manner. There was never any mental battle or misunderstanding of the rules of grammer specifically, or the English language generally -it just made sense! Throughout my schooling, I continued to progress my writing skills, specifically in grammar, and I began tutoring students of various ages, and some even older than I was, in the subject. Although I'm not fond of admitting to it, I was the kid in the class that would point out the teacher's mistakes. I continued to tutor and also began editing college papers and, later, screenplays and novels, which I still do today. Interestingly, I find that grammar mistakes are the most common sort of errors found in all types of literary works. I truly believe that I can successfully tutor this subject field, to not merely correct mistakes but to attempt to aid the student to see for him/herself the "sense" grammar makes. proofreading I have always excelled in the English language, ever since I began to delve into it as my second language at age 5. Reading dictionaries was a favorite pastime of mine as a child. I wrote my first short story at age 10; my teacher swore to my mother that I would become a famous writer some day. A poem of mine was published when I was 16. By the time I was in high school, I was editing college papers. I earned a few A+ papers at UCLA, and numerous A papers, graduating with a 3.97 GPA. I continue to write and edit today. Grammar, spelling, punctuation - proofreading is probably my strongest point. study skills I have always been somewhat of a nerd, meaning I studied more than anyone else and harder than I probably needed to. One theory to this has to do with the fact that I immigrated to the U.S. (at the age of 5) and perhaps always felt that I had to try harder than others if I wanted to succeed. But my mother says I was always extremely sharp, even in Israel before we moved here, and learned to speak, read, and write at a very early age. Throughout my school experience, I have developed particular study strategies that have aided me in doing well in school, and most importantly, that have helped me actually grasp what it is I'm learning. I feel that I can pass along my passion for learning, discipline and study techniques to younger students and make them actually want to learn. theatre As a working actress, I have almost 10 years acting experience. I studied theatre at Pierce College, Santa Monica college, as well as in numerous independent acting classes and workshops. I have performed in several professional theatre productions, which included starring and supporting roles, and I have a number of short and feature film credits. Most notably, a film I starred in called "Stealing Innocence" has shown in over 60 film festivals worldwide, won over 15 awards, and earned me a Best Actress Award at the Beverly Hills Film Festival and a Best Supporting Actress Award at the New York Independent Film Festival. I was also a member of the prestigious Met Theatre Company for over 2 years.
