About
Olen: |
Hey! Let me help you with your language and humanities studies through informal, fun, and effective tutoring.
I received a BA in French from UCLA with an emphasis in language, literature, and urban culture, an MA in Cultural Anthropology from the California Institute of Integral Studies, and have had extensive training in German and Spanish.
I have lived in France (and Germany) and have experience teaching both kids and adults in the classroom and one-on-one setting. I can help you not only with perfecting your grammar, but also with perfecting your accent. These languages are NOT my mother tongue, which means that, just like you, I had to learn the language “from scratch” – and I went on to major in French in college! I've been there and understand what it takes to master French as a native English speaker. I did it and so can you. While textbooks are helpful as a reference, using the spoken language as it is used in the day-to-day world as the base from which to learn is much more effective and much more fun! Exploring current events, movies, music, pop culture, and literature is a great, non-traditional way to learn.
I tutor all levels of French, German, Spanish, English as a Second Language, and all humanities subjects.
I help my students re-frame and approach subjects like geography, reading, languages, humanities, and schoolwork in general in a non-traditional way that makes it fun and relevant to life - especially if they are totally bored by school. Kids like me. With all my students, getting to know them and discovering their interests is the most important dimension to making learning happen.

Olen's Experience:
ESL/ESOL

I taught English to German kindergarteners with a company called Oskar Lernt Englisch on a freelance contract basis. I also was a camp counselor at their English language immersion summer camp, where we had daily, structured language classes in addition to camp activities.
I also taught English to German adults in a class that I created called "English with Theater," using theatrical texts to improve the comprehension and spoken English of intermediate level English students at a school called Sprachenatelier Berlin.
While I am not certified in ESL, I consider myself to be a highly effective and patient teacher.
