 About Gail:
Gail taught middle school English, American history, geography, Washington State history, reading, journalism, writing and needle crafts for thirty-two years, retiring several years ago to write stories for children. She has numerous how-to articles printed in newsletters and magazines specifically catering to the children's writer, and she spends her days writing stories, writing articles, and critiquing and editing stories for others. If you need a professional educator skilled in working with the urban child, she should be your first choice.

Learn More About Gail's Experience:
elementary (k-6th)
I taught English and social studies to 6-9th graders for 32 years. My teaching certificate indicates I can teach K-12th grade, so I feel I'm therefore skilled enough to work with 4th to 6th graders. I understand the age level quite well.
grammar
Not only did I teach grammar to 6th through 9th graders for 32 years, I currently write articles on grammar and usage for newsletters aimed at children's writers. The column is called Grammar Gremlins. About 25 of those articles have been published in several publications and on the Internet.
proofreading
Being a professional children's writer and author of about 25 articles published concerning how-to write well, and being a professional educator who has taught grammar/usage/writing for 32 years, I feel very qualified.
sewing
For many years as a poorly paid teacher, I made all my own clothes as a way to save money. My mother and grandmother were accomplished seamstresses as well. I also taught students and adults to knit, crochet, embroider, and do plastic canvus and counted cross stitch. I DO NOT tat or quilt, but I do most of the rest of the needlework skills. Knitting has made a big come back recently, and it is again being taught in schools.
study skills
One of the main subjects covered in middle school is study skills. I've taught how to use SQ3R as a way to learn material in a text book, how to use the first letter of each word in a list as a reminder of the list items, and other tricks to learning a subject matter. Also, I taught students how to organize their learning for optimal results: use a notebook with tabs to represent each subject, make a plan for homework ahead of time, find a quiet area with no distractions, reward yourself for time well spent by playing a video game for 10 minutes after each half hour of study. This rests the mind and rewards the student. I've had plenty of experience with study skills.
