 About Matthew:
I specialize in English and Russian language reading, writing, speaking and listening skills training via creating individualized language acquisiton programs for students of all levels of English and beginner to advanced students of Russian. As I am only what is called a "near-native" speaker of Russian, I do not feel qualified to proofread large scale compositions (theses, manuscripts, etc.). However, I have a Cambridge ESL certificate and a year of ESL training experience to all levels to most age groups (excluding young children) and learned Russian from the ground up. More importantly, I am very good at explaining why the language funcitons in a specific way and endeavor to answer all questions asked in a way which each individual student finds satisfactory. My writing and translating skills in English are first-rate (requiring no proofreading) and second rate (requiring occasional correction) in Russian. I am of the school of thought that all students must be tested on their knowledge, if language acquisition is the goal, and from the results of these tests I tailor a course focued on the student's needs with a great deal of listening and speaking practice starting from the first day with beginners. With this I ahve seen thirteen-year-olds unable to speak at all begin to hold a conversation after two months with only three total toruing hours (and about this much homework) per week. If compostion is an issue, a program focused on the student's interests can be designed. As far as other professional qualifactions, I have retained my post as staff translator for the Laboratory of Written Translation at St. Petersburg State University, a leading research and professional services center at one of Russia's flagship educational institutions, though I am no longer living in Russia. For a period of time I was also personal translator to one of Russian President Putin's many friends, the Rector of the State Mining Institute. I would be very happy to hear from you with any questions you might have about how we might work together to create a program to address any language issues in either English or Russian.

Learn More About Matthew's Experience:
ESL/ESOL
I have a CETLA and one year teaching experience in Russia to adults and young adults of all levels in group and individual settings. I taught primarily for Educatrain and could most likely get ahold of a reference over there for proof if required.
grammar
As an ESL teacher, I have seen no end of grammar books of all forms and had to answer countless grammar questions. Regardless, please supply a test on this subject as proof of my competence.
proofreading
As a translator at the Lab of Written Translation at SPbSU, proofreading is an almost daily activity (i.e. the retranslation of a non-native's translation into decent English). Please feel free provide a test for this competency as well.
Russian
I have a Bachelor's with honors from UNM and half a Master's in Translation and Interlingual Translation from St. Petersburg State University in Russia completed (all coursework being taken in Russian). I have lived for over two years in Russia and retain my post as staff translator for the Laboratory of Written Translation, a leading research and professional services center, at the Faculty of Philology of SPbSU. My Russian would be classified as "near-native," and I would be happy to submit to any test or phone call you might like to give me to prove it. It has taken me about seven years to get here.
