About
Mariah: |
|
Hola :) My name is Mariah, and I am a 2007 graduate of Colby College where I double majored in Spanish and Latin American Studies.
While at Colby, I was an active volunteer and leader. I worked with at-risk youth in educational settings and helped to organize community building events to bring Colby together with the Waterville community. I started an ESL tutoring initiative in the Waterville school system as well as programming for Latino Heritage Month at the local libraries and in after-school programs.
Outside of working with kids, I was in an a cappella group, performed in two theatrical shows, and was a hip hop teacher and choreographer.
Where direct tutoring experience is concerned, I served as a Spanish tutor through Colby's Spanish department, working with college students struggling to learn the language. I also worked with English as a Second Language speakers in various classrooms in Waterville.
My junior year, I substitute taught high school Spanish classes in Scarborough, Maine full-time for a month and even administered and graded midterms.
I bring to the table an excitement for learning languages, writing, history and current events which all stem from both my own classroom learning and also from my experiences doing hands on work with children in a variety of settings. My time spent abroad studying and volunteering in both Costa Rica and Argentina give me an added passion to show others the importance of constantly learning and growing which I hope to bring to my students!

Where elementary education is concerned, I have tutored in both in-classroom and outside of the classroom settings. I started an ESL program initiative on my college campus and tutored young students who spoke English as a Second Language. Not only that, but I read to children in the local library and have tutored young children in both reading and in Spanish. I have been babysitting for years and have also taught dance to kids. I have the utmost patience with the youngsters!

ESL/ESOL
|
In college, I started an ESL program initiative for the Waterville public schools. I organized and instructed over 20 tutors and tutored a Colombian boy and a Chinese girl in two different classrooms.

proofreading
|
For most of my life, I've assisted friends and family with the proof reading of their papers, college essays, Spanish writing, and DBQs (document-based questions). I enjoy proofing for history classes, language classes, and English classes.

study skills
|
I pride myself on my organizational skills and study habits. I have learned various methods of studying that have helped me through the years and that I feel would help others as well. These methods include but are not limited to: outline writing, flashcards, sing-song/rhyming, word association, and how to select important, pertinent information in text. I am great at helping students stay organized and find methods that work best for them to learn by.
