More On James's Subjects:

  • ESL/ESOL

Before switching my major to English Literature and receiving my degree in it. I was in the English Education program and as part of our requirements to receive a degree in the subject area is to work with ESOL students. I completed many hours in interships working in elementary, secondary, and adult workshops. I generated lesson plans specifically geared towards integrating students of other languages into the mainstream. I have hands on experience in this area with good results and would like the chance to help more students.

  • study skills

I received my degree in English Literature but not before becoming certified (no longer valid) as an English Teacher (grades 6-12). I would have received my degree in English Education, however, at the last moment I decided to change routes. When I switched my major I had completed all necessary internships except my final one. During the course of these internships I worked one on one, in group, and classroom setting teaching students not only about English but how to study it. One of my main techniques was teaching students how to learn the material in addition to teaching them the material. If you don't set a student up for success then they will most surely fail. Some of the study skills I've imparted were how to properly read material for what you need, how to capture that material in a summary (making a well worn path in the memory), making a schedule to show how much time is available for studying, and defusing the test anxiety by teaching students that if you know the material then no test can stop you.
