About
Chris: |
|
I am a NYS certified, experienced Reading teacher, with varied tutoring experience. I have tutored at various grade levels, including GED prep. I have strong phonics skills and have also taught writing for NYS ELA tests in my current school district. Reading comprehension skills are also a key focus of my teaching. These skills together also form the basis of solid study skills.
While I began my education career in a high school setting, also gaining GED prep experience; I decided to become certified in Elem. Education [Gr. K-6]to accompany my MS in Reading from UAlbany. Along with getting my Master's degree, I completed the certification for becoming a Reading Specialist,Gr.K-12. I currently teach Reading in a local school district.
My tutoring style is to meet the student where they are and work with them to achieve their goals. I believe in setting realistic, reachable goals and then resetting them as progress is made. This allows me to help the student become more self confident and proud of their accomplishments. It is also very motivating for students to see progress and feel invested in setting their own goals. I try to choose materials that interest the student, increasing their desire to learn more than just a 'tutoring lesson'.
With younger students I incorporate learning games, as well as connected text. Basic sentence skills are also a component of my reading lesson plans.
I love teaching and am thrilled to see my students progress. I'm a cheerful person with a 'you can do it' attitude. |

My qualifications for tutoring elementary [K-6] content areas are based on my permanent NYS Elementary Certification K-6, Common Branch and permanent Reading Certifications. Passing all required NYS certification exams for each, 8 years experience in public school teaching and a true enjoyment of children are my foundations. I have tutoring experience in Reading/Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science in grades K through 6 in my current district.
As a tenured, local public school teacher I am experienced in using multiple research-based curricula in these subject areas. I also enjoy adding hands-on materials to help motivate young students. My Reading specialty gives me the knowledge and experience to use the various facets of literacy to help unlock other subjects for students. My recent work tutoring in my district helps keep me current in the newer approaches to Social Studies, Science and Math. While I have worked extensively with Kindergarteners through 4th graders, I have also worked with 5th and 6th graders.

My qualification for tutoring phonics stems from my permanent NY State certifications as a Reading teacher, and K-6 Common Branch teacher. I have a MS in Reading from UAlbany. My tenured position as a Reading teacher in a local district has afforded me training in several research-based reading programs, including Harcourt Storytown and Success For All, with exposure to the Wilson method.
Phonics is an integral part of all research-based reading programs, as it unlocks the codes of reading. I have a great deal of expertise and experience in assessing for gaps in Phonemic Awareness, Decoding Skills and Fluency. Individualized instruction based on assessment results in concentrated focus in areas needing support. I am also experienced in using multi-sensory lessons to help students who are having trouble making connections between written letters and sounds. Finding and filling in these gaps can prevent major reading comprehension problems in the future.
I have also tutored teens and adults who were working towards getting a GED. Many of these students made large gains based on the phonics instuction integrated into their individualized student plans that helped them raise their reading levels to the 12th grade.
