About
Gideon: |
|
I started tutoring mathematics in high school, and in the twenty-five years since then I've earned three degrees in mathematics and a doctorate in mathematics education. Teaching mathematics, whether in classes or individually, whether online or in person, is my greatest professional passion. I can help you whether you're a kid struggling with middle-school mathematics or a university student grappling with upper-level college courses -- I have a talent for being able to communicate mathematics at whatever level you need it. |

Gideon's Experience:
discrete math
|
I am familiar with the foundational topics of Discrete Mathematics: set theory, symbolic logic, induction, recursion, permutations, combinations, and discrete probability because I have encountered them repeatedly both as a student and as a teacher. I have less familiarity with more advanced topics in Discrete Mathematics, such as graphs and trees, but I'm certain that with the Web and the two most popular textbooks [Rosen and Epp] as resources I'll be able to figure out how to help students with any difficulty in this area. I also have some very basic computer programming experience, which often helps since Discrete Mathematics is often taught in the context of computer science.

statistics
|
I have taken two undergraduate introductory statistics courses, as well as two graduate courses in statistical educational research. Therefore, I have a good grounding in both the computational processes and useful applications of statistics. I have the ability to explain the relationship between the concepts and formulas, and also to help students identify what kind of data they are collecting [ordinal vs. ratio, for example] and what statistical test is allowed for such data [a common error is to apply t-tests to compare ordinal data]. My knowlege extends firmly to the level of chi-square tests and linear regression, and I'm a little less firm, but could be ready within a few hours study of my books and notes, for topics such as multiple regression, ANOVA, and ANCOVA.
