About Alex:

My name's Alex, and I'm currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Washington in microbiology. As an undergraduate, I majored in microbiology (with a chemistry minor), and after I graduated in 2004, I moved to Seattle to begin graduate school.

I have had a lot of teaching experience. As a grad student, I have taught two classes (introductory microbiology lab and genetics). I also have given a lecture in a medical microbiology course. I'm also the recipient of the microbiology department's annual teaching award.

Outside of grad school, I do have some experience tutoring one-on-one. To be honest, I enjoy tutoring more than teaching a classroom because I feel that I can explain things very well when I am talking one-on-one with a student.

My teaching style is to break down complex ideas into simple, easily understood concepts (often using visual analogies to everyday objects).

I feel that I can tutor in math (up through about calculus), microbiology, biology, and chemistry.

From my students, I have received very positive feedback. Some have even told me to become a teacher!

I hope to hear from you!

More On Alex's Subjects:

  • biochemistry

I am a microbiology Ph.D. student at the University of Washington. As an undergraduate, I majored in microbiology (and minored in chemistry) and took a semester-long introductory biochemistry class. Everyday in the lab, I do biochemistry-like experiments. I extract lipids from bacteria, I perform DNA gel electrophoresis, etc. I also attend seminars and journal clubs, many of which have biochemistry principles in them (e.g., protein folding, etc.). While I don't remember an awful lot from the actual class (like formulas, metabolic cycles, etc.), I did make an "A" in the class, and I am confident that I would be able to tutor a student in introductory biochem after I did a little brushing up.

  • GRE

Hi. I took the GRE back in January 2003. Here are my scores: Verbal 570 (78th percentile) Math 740 (80th percentile) Written 5.5 (82nd percentile) So, I'm no whiz at the GRE, but I think I could lend a hand to somebody who needs a lot of help. I'm also a Ph.D. student at the Univ. of Washington, so I guess I was good enough for them. :)

  • statistics

Hi-- I took stats back as undergraduate. I made an "A" in the class. I can help people with basic, introductory stats (e.g., mean, median, mode, basic probability, standard deviation, normal curve, chi square, t-test). --Alex
