 About Lisa:
Hello,

My name is Lisa and I have worked with children in a variety of settings such as classroom, child care, mentoring, and advocacy. I received a Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Washington with an emphasis in Child Development.

I have over 12 years of experience working with children and focusing on academics. I've mentored high risk youth and was required to spend 50% of my one-on-one time with them on academics. I also work for the Seattle School District as a paraprofessional teacher's assistant.

I have experience working with children with special needs. I am very patient with my students and expect them to try their very best without too much coaching. Therefore, my teaching style involves letting the child find their own answers and give their best effort before stepping in to help. I believe that many children think of tutors as people who will hand out all the answers, and so then they just don't try. My philosophy is this: children have the knowledge but lack the self-confidence, they just need to be reminded of how capable and smart they really are!

I hope your child can benefit from my years of experience. I have helped many children accomplish their academic goals, move onto their next grade, and achieve ultimate self-confidence.

Thank You!
Lisa

Learn More About Lisa's Experience:
chess
I have learned Chess and played this game for many years. In my various occupations working with children, I have taught them strategies and appropriate moves for pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, kings and queens. I have also played against the computer, and have won many times!
elementary (k-6th)
I have worked with elementary school aged children for over 10 years in various settings (classroom, child care, mentoring and tutoring). I work directly in schools and currently serve as a paraprofessional teacher's assistant. I substitute in a variety of classrooms, including Special Education (self-contained and inclusion) classes.
ESL/ESOL
As a substitute paraeducator, I am required to accept positions that provide bilingual services to children learning English as a second language. I have substituted to work with children from Spanish, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Chinese backgrounds.
grammar
I have a Bachelors in Psychology from the University of Washington, and I could not have received my degree without learning proper grammar, as I have written many term papers and research papers. I have also helped many children with grammar in their Language Arts courses.
phonics
I have had experience in teaching phonics as many of the schools I have worked at required a structured system of testing children in phonics. I am familiar with the school district's policies on how to test appropriately.
