Cynthia's Experience:
elementary (k-6th)
|
My Elementary education experience began back in the 1970s. Since then I have taught and substituted for PreK-6th grade. Most recently, I taught 1st and 2nd grade ESL at an Edison school. My students were from varying backgrounds and languages. My approach to tutoring this age is most importantly, meeting the student where he/she is academically. I am able to develop a specific plan for your child and make the tutoring time fun and academically challenging at the same time. I have a MA in Education which was conferred May 2007 so my methods are progressive and research based. My students have always indicated they love my smile, my easy going nature and high expectations.

ESL/ESOL
|
I am highly qualified in this subject as I received a MA with an Endorsement in teaching English as a Second Language. I am able to develop academic and professional plans that will challenge my student, as well as make it enjoyable and low-stress. I meet the student where he/she is, and understand where to begin and how to assess what the student has accomplished. The most difficult part of learning a new language is working through the anxiety of speaking. With that, the material is highly comprehensible for students and they feel accomplished on Day 1.
In addition to teaching 1st and 2nd grade ESL, I have two years experience teaching English and parenting classes to adults. I have traveled the world extensively and taught English in a women's weaving cooperative in Guatemala. While my Spanish is intermediate, I am able to understand, read and respond to potential students who have little or no English. Other languages are not an issue as my progressive and research based approach to learning English does not require that I know all languages.

study skills
|
I am already an accomplished tutor, as I worked in an Excel Writing and Study Center at the University of Colorado. I was a peer tutor for students for writing and study skills. I have taught test taking and study strategies to my adult learners and am comfortable with the process necessary to be successful. I am a published writer and have a journal article pending with BYU Education and Law journal and had a 4.0 GPA as a graduate student, so I am an excellent and confident role model and lifelong learner.

TOEFL
|
The TOEFL exam is very rigorous and I am aware of the preparation necessary to be successful. I was partially through the ETS Testing Services Rater training for Writing, but acquired a different job so declined the position. The training I was required to undergo was extremely challenging and I was able to pass the first set of tests they require. As a result, I know the test from a critical point of understanding, having studied the entire test from a rater point of view. As a 4.0 GPA graduate student, I tutored students at the University of Colorado, as well as I currently teach English to adults in a Title 1 program.
