About Amy

I posses New York State Certification, certified to teach math at the junior high and high school level. I have been teaching/ tutoring students for 7 years in public schools, tutoring agencies, learning centers, and a test preparation company. My experience involves having taught algebra, geometry, trigonometry, SAT math, and pre-calculus to culturally and ethnically diverse students of different learning abilities and ages.

Math has always been my passion and talent. There's nothing I find more intellectually stimulating than an SAT math question or a problem that demands me to draw upon various aspects of mathematics. Throughout my education I have excelled in this particular area of study.

My past and present experience with children and teenagers has made me a stronger educator. As a math teacher, I believe that it is essential to be able to communicate in a clear and precise way so that students can easily grasp new concepts. My approach to teaching involves identifying my students' strengths and weaknesses; I teach them skills that they lack so that I can solidify their mathematical foundation. Their strengths are a stepping stone to teaching them further knowledge. In addition to equipping students with the skills to solve problems in multiple ways, I feel it is even more important to teach them how to approach a problem in order to solve it. Furthermore, I often differentiate my teaching to fit the needs of my students.

As a student, my teachers made a world of a difference in my life. They instilled in me a love for learning and showed me that they cared about my success. As a teacher, I try to do the same for my students. With my patience, dedication and determination, and the good rapport with my students which comes naturally for me, I am the happiest when I am able to guide them, challenge them, and help them achieve.

More On Amy's Subjects

drawing

Throughout high school and college I recieved outstanding remarks from my teachers and professors about my drawing skills and the composition of my work. My specialty is drawing from life, whether it would be still life, portraits, self-portraits, plants, or animals. I have been a teacher assistant to drawing, ceramics, and sculpture classes. Comments recieved include that I have "hands of gold" and that my artwork looks "very real". I can only give credit to the fact that I have a good background in ceramics that has resulted in a good understanding of form, depth, and light. Art classes that I've taken include: Drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and printmaking.
