Learn More About Emma's Experience:
elementary (k-6th)
I have worked with elementary students in a variety of capacities. I nannied for two elementary aged children and helped them with homework regularly. I also volunteered in a 3rd grade class for two years. I easily connect and work with this age group.
ESL/ESOL
I have taught adule ESL for several years as a volunteer at St. Peters church in Massachusetts. I also worked as a high school teacher at a school with a 50% rate of english language learners. I also taught English in Namibia (southern Africa) when I lived there. I have a lot of experience (even though I don't have my TOEFL) in working with people of all ages who are learning English.
flute
I took private lessons in flute and played in a large band for 10 years. I informally taught with my flute teacher in high school. I can read music and have taught reading music as well as fingering and aperture.
grammar
Grammar is something that comes naturally for me and when I work with ESL students, I regularly teach grammar. I also was an English major in college.
proofreading
I have always been a proofreader. I would proof writing before I even knew what proofing was as a young child. I have an eye for language and detail which makes me a great person to check writing. I worked as a proofreader all through college and as with the Seattle University GMAT review course. I can help with personal statements for admission, business letters, proposals, creative fiction or love letters.
study skills
Since I taught high school and volunteered with elementary school aged children as well as doing an internship with middle schoolers in college, I know that some student's study skills need some work. I have met with many different kinds of students to help them get organized and focused when it comes to studying.
TOEFL
I have been teaching ESL for years and have much experience with helping English language learners pass this test - through content and general test prep. Sometimes knowing the language and passing a test on it are two very different things. You can look forward to personalized, well prepared instruction to help you with this important test.
voice (music)
I was in a well respected girls' choir for 12 years. I have worked with children from kindergarten through high school age with pitch, intonation, reading music, ensemble singing, breathing techniques and performance.
yoga
I have been practicing yoga for 12 years and have taught for 5 years. I believe that the focus, awareness and proprioception gained through the practice aids students in all aspects of life, including their studies. I am happy to bring breathing techniques, poses or philosophy into my work with a student, even if it's not technically a yoga "class".
