I have quite a bit of teaching and tutoring experience. While I was at Boston University, I limited my work study employments almost exclusively to tutoring students in Economics and Calculus. Later, at Cornell, I gained one year of classroom teaching experience as a Teaching Assistant for Principles of Economics courses. In 2007, I completed my Peace Corps tour of duty. I was a volunteer in Ghana, West Africa, where I spent two years teaching math at an impoverished rural high school.
From late January to early March of 2008, I worked with middle school students in Harlem to help them prepare for the state-wide math exam. I spent the remainder of the spring semester working at a tutorial, where I was responsible for preparing students for the Math section of the SHSAT. I love working with students, especially in one-on-one or small group settings, where I can fruitfully play the role of a tutor and mentor.
I am patient and articulate. I am good at unpacking stuff that may appear dense at first glance. I encourage my students to ask me questions along the way. If I particular concept is difficult to grasp, I try to come up alternative explanations, to help make it clear and understandable.
I believe that students learn most effectively when they are actively involved in the process. I tailor my lessons based on this tenet, allowing students ample time to solve problems on their own, which helps boost their confidence.
