Hello!
My name is Victoria. I am new to the Seattle area, and I'm happy to be in a place where there seem to be so many possibilities. I have been traveling and working for the last 15 months in southern Europe, Israel, and all over the US, so I do well with all kinds of people in all kinds of situations. I love teaching because I find it very exciting to watch someone discover knowledge within themselves, using the tools which a teacher places in front of them. I do not believe you can -make- someone learn something, only give them a place where they feel safe, and the tools and information for them to learn to teach themselves (which is the most useful skill in the long run).
I attended an excellent private high school in Norfolk, VA and graduated in 2002 with a 3.8 cumulative GPA. I scored a 1580 on my SATs (800 verbal, 780 math) and a 34 on my ACTs. I graduated from Bard College (NY) in May 2006 with a 3.8 GPA and a BA in writing/literature and dance. During college, I taught dance to classes of 5 to 40 students several times a week and ran a dance collective, as well as choreographing and producing several shows.
Since college, I have worked for my room and board on many organic farms and one boat all over Europe, tackling every imaginable work, living and social situation with an optimistic and determined disposition. As a free-lance writer, I have published in several arts and culture magazines and written several full-length fiction and non-fiction pieces. I have also been an assistant teacher of creative writing for gifted high schoolers in the middle of the Painted Desert at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, one of the most interestng and inspiring jobs I've ever had. Currently, I tutor disadvantaged kids at local elementary schoolers, write for several arts+culture publications, teach dance class, and I am a semi-professional dancer.
Teaching is the job I want to pursue with my life, with an emphasis on language and the arts. Literature, writing and dance are my strong suits, but you can see from my experiences that I have much more to share. From my own education, I know that there is nothing more valuable in this world than a good teacher. My mentor once told me 'In the beginning, you must always say 'yes' to your students. Try never to say 'no.'' I will do my best to help you and support you as you grow. I look forward to hearing from you, meeting you, and working with you.
