About Julianna

I graduated magna cum laude in social anthropology from Harvard University and went on to complete a master's in music from the reputed Manhattan School of Music. As a lover of knowledge sharing, a portion of my student time has always been devoted to language, writing, or other subject instruction and tutoring. Accordingly, I have nearly 10 years of freelance and in-school teaching and tutoring experience both in the United States and abroad. It is wonderful to be able to help someone "get" what he or she hasn't quite been able to figure out alone, to build confidence, and to make school work or test-taking or practicing less frustrating and more enjoyable. I look forward to great explorations and achievements in learning with you!

More On Julianna's Subjects

  • grammar

I have actively been a freelance and contract editor for some 7 years, which, among other things, requires an excellent command of grammatical concepts and rules. As the student of a famous anthropologist who happens also to be the chief editor of two of the discipline's major publications, I was expected to perform at a very high in terms of my own writing and edition. It is no coincidence, then that I have since also acted as a writing and grammar coach to native and non-native writers/speakers.

  • general music

I began teaching music -- theory and piano -- at the age of 10 at Rainey Institute of Music in Cleveland, OH. In addition to my many, many years of music study and performance (piano, harpsichord, guitar, theory and composition, voice) and my Master's of music from the Manhattan School of Music, I have offered private music and piano lessons for some 5 years.

  • voice (music)

I have been a private vocal and (singing) diction tutor since 2001. I have an MM from the Manhattan School of Music in voice, have performed with the Boston Lyric Opera and Zurich Opera, among others, and am an opera singer by vocation.

  • ESL/ESOL

My first formal experience teaching ESL was at the Log School in Dorchester, MA, some 9 years ago. I designed and taught an adult summer beginning/intermediate ESL course. The following year, during the semester I lived in Paris, France, I gave one-on-one ESL instruction to adults and children with various levels of English language background. From 1999-2002, I acted as an editor and writing coach for a non-native speaking professional. More informally, I have been the ESL tutor to my husband, a German, and to my 6th grader step-daughter. During these years, I have remained up-to-date with current ESL teaching practices by reading several of the ESL teaching journals and newsletters, as well as by reviewing various available teaching aids for adult and school-aged students.
