About Thomas:

If you have a desire to learn (or a desire to help your children learn) then pick me as your tutor. I'm a polymath! I was an overachiever in high school: I took six AP's (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, European History, Lang. & Comp and Spanish) as well as General Microbiology (a junior level college course) at a local college. I was in my school's top choir, took seven years of private piano lessons (classical & jazz) and continue to play today, competed in Forensics--won 1st place in the state's Duo Interp competition, was the President of our Mime Troupe, created the Shakespeare club, was heavily involved in theater, and took part in a medical conference for students interested in applying to medical school at the University of California-Berkeley in 2000.

I majored in Theater Arts & Microbiology in college, have a Certificate in Sexuality Studies (which is like triple majoring!), was on the Dean's List throughout college and graduated with Honors in my major in three and half years. I went to the Yale School of Drama right after college for Acting and just graduated in May of 2007.

My teaching style is fun & engaging and can shift according to a student's needs and interests. No matter what the subject is, you have to find out what sparks a fire in you. What's the angle of a particular subject that will hook you and make you come back for more? If you can find out what fascinates you most, it can open up endless possibilities with respect to learning. This is my goal for my students.

More On Thomas's Subjects:

  • piano

I've played piano since I was 11yo. I studied exclusively with an amazing teacher named Gilda Biel. She was a Professor who retired and lived in Des Moines, IA where I grew up. She studied piano growing up with the intent of becoming a professional pianist herself. Instead of taking that path, she decided to become an academic when she was 18. She earned her A.B. from Harvard and Ph.D. from Columbia in Music History. I took lessons with her until I went to college. I continue to play today and have taken lessons with a jazz pianist, Joe Williams, in CT while I was a grad student at Yale. I've played regularly for the cabaret (student-run theater on Yale's campus) and have directed a musical (The Last Five Years). The musical was one of the season's best productions.

  • theatre

I was a Theater Arts major in undergrad at the University of Iowa. As a major, I took 30+ credit hours in courses ranging from history, acting technique, voice, movement, design, stage crafts, directing. I also did an Honors project which included performing the lead in a play of my choice & writing a thesis. I graduated with Honors in the major. After college, I went straight to grad school: Yale School of Drama. I got my M.F.A. in the Acting program. I took one, yearlong history course and received an Honors grade (the highest grade) in it. As an MFA graduate from Yale (which is a terminal degree for acting study), I'm qualified to teach acting at any University in the country. Yale is if not the best, among the best theater training programs in the country.
