About
Elena: |
I am a rising Harvard junior majoring in Applied Mathematics and Biology.
My primary tutoring experience comes from teaching physics and biology at Summerbridge San Francisco and Breakthrough New York, both free summer schools for low income, high potential students. I have also tutored privately in a variety of subjects. Although my primary academic interests lie in the sciences, I have also excelled in writing and history, and have informally helped many of my peers edit essays and write study guides for these subjects.
My major extracurricular interest is singing. I was in the San Francisco Girls Chorus for 10 years, and here at Harvard, I sing with choral and opera groups. I am an accomplished soloist and sight-reader and would be happy to coach voice or sight-reading. I have experience teaching singing and choral methods from being a Section Leader in the SF Girls Chorus, and I am also the Music Director of the Radcliffe Pitches, Harvard's oldest all-female a cappella singing group.
If you want the details of my qualifications for each subject, please see my resume. In a nutshell: I scored 5s on 7 AP Exams (French Language, French Literature, Physics C, BC Calculus, US History, European History, Microeconomics), got a 2350 on my SAT, had great SAT II scores, and get A's and A-'s at Harvard (where I have taken a mix of math, physics, computer science, biology, economics, history, and writing).
I would be very excited to help you improve your skills and succeed in school or singing! My tutoring approach varies depending on the subject matter. I can help you with your weekly homework assignments, or we can work out a schedule for going through a textbook and doing practice problems/exercises. I can even write extra practice tests/assignments for you so you can solidify your knowledge of the material even further. I am a patient, knowledgeable, and fun tutor. Also, though this laundry list of qualifications may suggest otherwise, I have a great sense of humor.

I was a member of the San Francisco Girls Chorus for ten years, during which I was a Section Leader, Chorus Spokesperson to the Board, and Assistant Conductor. At Harvard, I am a paid member of the University Choir and sign with the Dunster House Opera. Both the SF Girls Chorus and UChoir demand top-notch sight-reading abilities. UChoir performs new, difficult pieces for church every Sunday, so we must be able to sight read them almost perfectly on the first try. Likewise, the San Francisco Girls Chorus has a comprehensive music theory/sight-singing program.

I was a member of the San Francisco Girls Chorus for ten years, during which I was a Section Leader, Chorus Spokesperson to the Board, and Assistant Conductor. Through the Chorus, I performed solos in Davies Symphony Hall (a 3000-seat music venue) and a 5-minute solo for the finale of an opening night for an ODC Dance Company program. I was also a member of the Peninsula Teen Opera, with whom I performed the roles of Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, Jo in Little Women, and Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte. At Harvard, I am a paid member of the University Choir and sign with the Dunster House Opera. I have taken voice lessons for five years, so I know how a typical voice lesson works and what exercises to do with students.
