About
Sylvia: |
|
Sylvia is a studious and outgoing NYU student, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Music with a 3.6 GPA. A straight-A student in high school, she did well on her SATs, SAT IIs (in Math, US History, and Literature), and AP exams (in Psychology, US History, AB Calculus, and US Literature). She has had a lot of experience working with elementary through middle school students at a tutoring center, and has also privately tutored a high schooler. In addition, she has assisted with music, theatre, and art classes, and interned at a Dramatherapy center for children with learning disabilities. She also has about ten years of music experience, including piano, ear training, and music history and theory. She just came back from a semester in Accra, Ghana, and is eager to start teaching again! So whether you or your child need assistance in reading, writing, phonics, math, SAT prep, or the arts, Sylvia can help! She is willing to travel throughout the five boroughs (anywhere that is accessible by public transportation), and can provide references upon request. |

Sylvia's Experience:
elementary (k-6th)

I have much experience in this area. I interned in a kindergarten class, frequently designing and carrying out my own activities for the class as well as working one-on-one with students who needed extra support. I assistant-taught a "Storybook Theatre" class of 5-7 first and second-graders, involving stories, poetry, drama, and music. Furthermore, I helped teach classes for the Manhattan School of Music Summer Camp. I also tutored in Star Learning Center for a year, working primarily with a first-grader but also substitute-tutoring many other students.
I am comfortable working with elementary school students of all ages. I have taught academic subjects including math, phonics, writing, and reading; I also greatly enjoy teaching music and other creative arts subjects.

general music
|
Over the years, I have had musical instruction and performed on the violin, trumpet, vocally (in choirs) and on the piano. I also taught myself some acoustic guitar. Piano is my principal instrument, however, and I have been playing for 9 years and have been a soloist, 4-hands performer, and accompanist at many concerts. I won the David E. Froelich Award for Music Enrichment. I attended the Manhattan School of Music Summer Camp, and then returned last year to be a Counselor-in-Training, helping teach music history, theory, and ear training. I am looking to tutor music at a beginner through intermediate level. I am most experienced with piano, but am familiar with many instruments and can definitely help with the academic side of music, such as history or theory.

piano

I have played piano for nine years. I took private lessons for many years, went to the Manhattan School of Music Summer Camp for piano, and participated in many performances, both as a soloist and a 4-hands player or accompanist. I won the David E. Froelich Award for Music Enrichment several years ago. Last year, I was a Counselor-in-Training at the Manhattan School of Music Summer Camp, where I helped teach various classes, including ear training and music history and theory.
I am looking to teach piano for beginners, preferably for children (as I have a lot of experience working with children) but adults are welcome too. I am fun, friendly, and patient, and would love to use my skills to teach people how to play this marvelous instrument.

proofreading
|
I am a strong writer and have worked as an editor on several publications. I got a perfect score on my SAT Verbal and near-perfect (780) on my SAT Writing. I also got a 5 on my English Literature AP (a large part of which is writing). Aside from the numbers, however, I honestly just really like copy editing and proof reading. I read through much of my younger brother's writing for school as well as my parents' writing (they are non-native English speakers), helping them correct mistakes. I even spot errors in newspapers, magazines, and ads on the subway. I seem to have a knack for this kind of thing, and would love to assist people by proof reading and helping them improve their writing.

Russian
|
I am a native speaker of Russian (I was born in Kishenev, Moldova, in the former Soviet Union). I have limited reading and writing abilities, but I am a fluent speaker. I am willing to tutor adults or children of any level who want to learn to speak Russian, or to improve their spoken Russian. I am fun, reliable, and friendly, and want to help people avoid the traditional boring, grammar-based language classes and instead gain a practical, working knowledge of the language.
