About
Polina: |
|
A friendly, experienced tutor (Master's degree in biochemistry) will help you with you develop organizational skills (particularly using MS Office) and invaluable study skills you will need for college and beyond. You will find me very efficient in communicating novel material and quick to adapt to your personal needs. I am extremely dedicated and well-disciplined. I have worked with high school students as well as college students from freshmen to seniors. As a Jerome Schiff fellow I have worked with Dr. Irving Epstein (Howard Hughes professor at Brandeis University) in a collaborative effort to design new methods for teaching science courses to college freshmen. My responsibilities included adaptation of textbook material to make it more comprehensive and engaging to students. Through years of tutoring experience I have developed methods for efficiently communicating scientific problems to students in chemistry, physics, biochemistry and mathematics. I have experience tutoring for SAT and MCAT standardized tests. My unique teaching experience includes working as a teaching assistant for an upper level biochemistry course at Brandeis University (I held weekly discussion sessions for students that had difficulties with lecture material) and teaching an organic chemistry lab course at Brandeis Summer School. |

Russian
|
Russian is my first language: I speak, read and write in it perfectly. I completed ten years of Russian language and literature (taught as separate subjects) in Moscow, Russia and was considering going for graduate studies in Russian language and literature before coming to the US. I am extremely proficient in Russian grammar and would be able to teach Russian at any level from beginner to most advanced. Moreover as a native speaker I can provide insight into fine connotations of words and their use in modern Russian language.

study skills
|
I graduated at the top 5% of my class (Brandeis summa cum laude), with BS and MS in biochemistry, Phi Beta Kappa. During my senior year I wrote a Master's research thesis in biochemistry while taking 6 classes every semester (4.00 average).
I owe this success exclusively to my high level of organization and superior study skills. This year I'm working with Hughes professor Irving Epstein on developing a posse program to help highschool students develop study skills to prepare them for success in college: proper reading skills, homework organization, computer skills and schedule planning skills.
