 About Vera:
Hi! I'm really looking forward to meeting you! I've been tutoring, mostly in math, since I was 16, and once I started college, I began tutoring english and history as well. I really love working with kids of all ages, and helping them develop skills in order to give them the ability to learn on their own. I strongly believe that learning should be fun, and I work hard to make the subject matter relevant to the student. I don't have one set teaching style; I prefer to meet students and then determine what method will work best for them. I like working with students, rather than simply conveying information to them. The best knowledge is that which is acquired on one's own. I'm fun and creative, and I enjoy finding new ways to solve old problems so that the work doesn't get boring or tedious. I try to become friends with my students, so that they don't see our time together as a chore, but rather, as something to look forward to and enjoy. I'm still in touch with all of the students I have had in the past, and I look forward to making more new friends through tutoring. See you soon!

Learn More About Vera's Experience:
elementary (k-6th)
I have been involved in the lives of elementary school kids since I was 11, when I started being a mother's helper. When I was 13, I started baby-sitting, and in high school, I started tutoring children of all ages. I feel that I connect with them fairly easily. I make learning fun, and help the students become less afraid of some of their school subjects which might scare them. One family I have been working with has three kids, all of whom I have known since they were born. The oldest is now in high school, while the youngest is still in elementary school. I have been tutoring them since they were all very young, and I have ensured that they are placed in higher levels. I have also interned in a 3rd grade classroom, taking over teaching and working with smaller groups of students.
ESL/ESOL
I majored in English at Brandeis University, and I love helping other people develop their English skills. I have worked with various ages of foreign students and I really love seeing their enthusiasm for learning the English language. I have helped them with reading, writing, speaking and listening. With one student, I read the newspaper, helping her to grasp both the content and the style of modern journalism. I believe that my English major combined with my experience at tutoring ESL shows that I am well-equipped to take on more ESL students, and help them succeed in America by bettering their English language skills.
GRE
I took the GRE last year and I got scores of 640 Verbal and 730 Math. I know how to study for it since I spent a large amount of time doing that, and I know I can help others succeed using the skills I have learned through my own experience. Also, I helped a lot of people at my college prepare for it, and all of them did quite well. One of my best friends who hadn't really done math in years asked me for help, and because of my help, he increased his score considerably. I also have extensive experience working with other standardized tests, such as the SAT, which use the same studying strategies as the GRE. I think that my experience and knowledge of testing can help others, and thus I want to tutor for the GRE.
religion
Throughout high school and college, I took many classes on religion, including a few courses on comparative religion. I majored in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, which focuses on Christianity and Islam as well as Judaism. In the fall, I am entering a Talmudic studies program in order to possibly become a rabbi. I have helped train kids for their bar mitzvahs, and I love sharing my knowledge of different world religions with young people. I constantly spend time trying to learn more about religion, in order to stay fully informed about religion's role in today's society.
