Anneke S. - Tutor in New York, NY (10025)

I studied at Yale University (BA), the Mannes College of Music (MM), and the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. I have especially strong English, writing, and French skills, but could also tutor test prep and history. I have been tutoring in New York City for the past 2 years. Additionally, I have six years of experience as a private music (cello) teacher. I have recently been employed as an editor and proofreader for an article in a Harvard law journal and for a book published by Oxford University Press; these jobs have relied upon my comfort with writing, grammar, and usage, as well as my ability to explain them to others. In my teaching, I want my students not only to gain skills but also to understand at a deep level what they are learning and why it is important. As a questioning person myself, I encourage my students to ask a lot of questions, to think creatively and independently, and to demand clear explanations from me. I prioritize the development of strong, comfortable teacher/student relationships; I achieve these by catering to each student's individual learning style, interpersonal skills, and sense of humor.

I have been teaching cello lessons, both privately and in schools, since 2003. I have taught students of all levels, ages 4-80. I have education in various aspects of music, with a BA in musicology from Yale, a MM in performance from the Mannes College of Music, and time spent studying cello at the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. I maintain an active performance schedule in the New York area, where I play with a string quartet and various other chamber ensembles. While completing my undergraduate degree at Yale University, I had a cello studio at Creative Music and Arts in Monroe, CT. While at Mannes, I held the position of Graduate Teaching Assistant in Chamber Music, where I coached and played with young chamber groups. I am currently on the faculty of the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, the Amadeus Conservatory of Music in Chappaqua, and In the Pocket Teaching Collective.
