About
Carolyn: |
|
I am a graduate of Rutgers University in Newark, from which I received a BA in Psychology. I went on to Kean College to become a certified elementary school teacher for grades K to 8.
I taught for 27 years in Newark and spent most of my career doing remedial instruction in reading, writing and math for basic skills students. I retired from teaching in 1997.
I have also done some tutoring which I really enjoyed. Recently I have subbed in ESL for adults and I have enjoyed it immensely and would love to do more of ESL teaching.
My 9th grade Basic Skills Instruction was in Math and I also taught reading, writing and math in Basic Skills in the elementary school.
I am a caring, compassionate person with a good sense of humor and I really love teaching and helping students to become proficient in the areas in which they are currently weak. I have tutored in math and in reading.
I individualize my instruction according to the needs of the students, even sometimes backing up to a lower skill if the student appears to need that skill--I am very flexible and creative in my approach to teaching and also give homework to give my students practice in the skills they need.

I have now had 6 months of experience teaching ESL to adults. I have done very well with it and I enjoy it very much. Combined with my 27 years of experience in teaching, I am qualified to teach ESL to children and adults. I am creative teaching English as a Second Language, emphasizing a great deal of speaking and also written work and listening in English.
|
grammar
|
I am very proficient in teaching grammar. I have studied it and taught it in depth for many years and would enjoy teaching it to all levels from 1st through adults.
|
proofreading
|
In high school I served as Proofreading Editor of our school newspaper. I have corrected many written assignments as a teacher, which involved a lot of proofreading. I am also a good writer, so I know when someone's writing is incorrect in grammar or the usage of punctuation or paragraphing. I would be a very proficient Proofreading tutor.
