About Debra

I have a Master's Degree, with an almost 4.0 GPA. I have been an elementary educator for 15 years, and several years teaching in Spanish and English simultaneously. I have traveled much of the world and have working knowledge of French, as well as bilingual certification in Spanish. I play piano and guitar, write music, write poetry, plays, and short stories. I was an actress on a popular soap opera for 2 years, while in college at UCLA. I have received awards for my teaching, and have also taught adults in ESL courses. I spent a summer teaching SAT courses as well. I have lived in several of the major US cities, and have a flower business.

More On Debra's Subjects

  • elementary (k-6th)

I have taught every grade, K-6, over 13 years for both public and private schools. I received recognition from the administration for excellence in teaching and classroom management, as well as a very creative room environment. My classroom was always orderly and productive, and fun! I have also received awards from parents (PTA) as well as requests from parents to the administration that their child be placed in my classroom the upcoming year. I have always had great rapport with the parents of my students and have sought to spend time with many families over the years at their homes and in their communities. I have worked with many different cultures and have also taught bilingually--both Spanish and English, simultaneously. Making lessons challenging as well as enjoyable has been a strength I have demonstrated in the classroom, and with a great amount of positive, encouraging input I have watched many kids begin to become more engaged and enthusiastic about school and learning, including kids with learning disabilities and struggles. Success in learning is very much about enjoying the experience while being stretched to do your very best, and to feel good about doing so.

  • ESL/ESOL

I have tutored individuals who have emigrated to the USA, or have come for work purposes for a short time, for over 18 years. From 1990 to 2003, I conducted a small tutoring business of my own teaching English as a Second Language to adults and children. I spent one full summer in Boston, MA working for Sanyo Corporation teaching English to business professionals from Korea. I also worked for 2 school districts in the Los Angeles, CA area: Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and Arcadia School District, between 1990 and 1996. I taught full-term adult ESL classes, through LAUSD, in the evenings with up to 50 students in one class. My students were from Asian and Hispanic countries primarily, however there were on occasion several individuals from Eastern Europe and other countries such as Iran and Turkey. I lived for over 13 years in a neighborhood of mainly families from a variety of Middle-Eastern countries, developing relationships with them by teaching them English informally, while they taught me their language as well. I have also worked for 2 other independent ESL tutoring agencies as an employee for various periods of time, and most recently have taught a Korean adult for 2 years and spent one year with a gentleman from China--a PhD research candidate at a very prestigious cancer research laboratory. He gave me an outstanding review, as has my current adult student. In conclusion, I taught in both English and Spanish for several of my 13 years working for LAUSD as an elementary school teacher, which involved consistent interaction with hundreds of students, faculty, parents, and other workers from a variety of Latin American countries, with whom I had the privilege many times to educate informally in the area of their English grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

Student Feedback

  • Outstanding!

Debra was outstanding in helping my daughter prepare for her end-of-the-year Spanish finals. She successfully clarified areas of confusion and intuitively worked on areas that would most likely be challenging. As a result, my daughter did great on her finals. Debra worked extremely well with my daughter, and I highly recommend her as a tutor. She is kind, professional, flexible, and highly capable. We can't thank Debra enough.
