I grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts and I attended the only public high school there. I received a B.A. in Geography, in 2005, from the University of Vermont. Although I majored in Geography, Math has always been my strongest subject. It is the one thing that comes most naturally to me and I wish to eventually purse a career in education as a Math teacher. I have gained a lot of experience with children over the years from working at camps, outdoor instructional schools, and tutoring students. I believe education has the greatest impact in determining a person’s future success. Math is often a problem for students, but I believe that everyone can be successful in Math, if they are given adequate support and instruction. This summer I was tutoring high school students in an inner city Charter School in Boston. I have seen how individual support has helped these students improve their Math skills. At the same time I was registered in three Math courses at the University of Massachusetts, in Boston. I have just recently moved to New York and I am looking for the opportunity to work with students, specifically in Math, as a tutor. When I tutor students I always want to make sure they feel comfortable and can see me as a peer. I find out what the student has most difficulty with in the subject and I use their strengths to make the subject more comprehensible and less intimidating. I try to incorporate their social life into the material. For example, if the student is interested in basketball, I will find a way to relate it to the subject.
