So, why would you pick me as your mathematics tutor? There are lots of choices, lots of good ones. But why me? We could start with my mathematical background. I have a BS from UC Berkeley and a Masters from Pitt. I've been teaching all levels of math for the last 20 years, from pre-algebra to calculus, from traditional stand alone courses to reform based integrated mathematics. I've taught statistics, probability and ACT and SAT prep courses. I am super geek. Teaching math is what I do. My teaching career was interupted by a three year stint as the director of Southwestern PA's Math and Science Collaborative, where I trained math teachers and helped districts strengthen their mathematics programs. But I missed the classroom. I missed working with students. So, why pick me? Is it because I know the subject, because I love teaching it? Partly. Because if you don't know the subject you can't teach it. But we all have known math types, folks that knew it and loved it, who had no idea of how to share that knowledge with someone who was struggling. Math types who couldn't figure out who their students were. My strength is in grasping where you are at, where you want and need to go, and designing and implementing a strategy to get you there. You need skill and drill? I have access to boat loads of materials. You need a deeper understanding of some topic that just doesn't quite make sense? I will give you multiple ways to think about that topic until the lightbulb comes on and "Aha" rolls off your tongue. Do you learn by putting your hands on things, by talking through a problem, by repeated practice? My strength is moving you ahead by using whatever means moves you fastest. My experience allows me to know what works, who it works for and how best to make it happen. And my years of success with all types of students should make you seriously consider picking me to meet your math tutoring needs.
