About Emily:

I graduated UNH with a double major (linguistics and Spanish, with coursework in teaching) and a GPA of 3.8 in five semesters. I am certified by Oxford Seminars to teach to the TOEFL exam. I have studied Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, German and Japanese on my own and in school, and am now a fluent Spanish speaker. Through UNH I worked as a private tutor to low-level adult ESL learners (native Korean speakers), and as a writing assistant. In high school I took AP English and was the only student in my school to receive a 5 on the AP exam. I am a person with a passion for languages; written and oral, English and otherwise. In teaching, I prefer to use real-world examples and props as much as possible, and I firmly believe in the importance of letting the student come up with their own response, rather than forcing them to parrot something a book says. I prefer a laid-back atmosphere in which the student can realize that not knowing everything already is not a crime, and discover his/her own best learning style.

More On Emily's Subjects:

  • ESL/ESOL

As an undergraduate at UNH, I majored in linguistics with a focus toward ESL/EFL. I have completed coursework (in both Spanish and English classrooms) on teaching and testing ESL; teaching in a language classroom; language acquisition among children; and second language acquisition among adults. last summer I received certification from Oxford Seminars to teach ESL, and I specialized my certification for teaching to the TOEFL. I have experience in tutoring very low-level adult learners of English whose native language I was not at all familiar with (Korean), and found that experience fulfilling and enjoyable. I find I am more comfortable with the intimacy and personalization of a tutor-tutee setting than as the leader of a whole classroom. I am able to adapt my teaching to a student's preferred textbook, or I can come up with my own curriculum after assessing the student's needs. Having studied four foreign languages (Spanish, Mandarin, German, Japanese), achieved fluency in one of then (Spanish), and lived in a foreign speaking country (Spain), I am fully able to relate to the importance of and frequent difficulty involved in improving foreign language skills.
