About
Amy: |
I come from a long line of teachers.
This has not only taught me much and fostered some of my own better teaching skills, but also given me an enjoyment of learning. I still seek out continuing education and learning opportunities. I am a curious person at heart.
I have seen teaching enthusiasm (or lack thereof) make or break many students’ learning experiences, sometimes for life, and for that, I take the responsibility of teaching very seriously.
I want to inspire those I teach to want to learn more on their own, long after I have worked with them.
I am a good teacher/tutor because I understand both sides of the learning coin. I have taken subjects that I picked up easily, barely needing instruction, but I have also struggled with classes that really challenged the level of performance I was able to give.
I enrolled in advanced classes all throughout school, and there were times when I realized the need to seek help from those who knew the subject much better than myself. In present teaching and in hindsight, I understand how patience plays a large part in this: both patience with the student’s own frustration and patience in their ability to eventually understand. With persistence, most anyone can grasp a concept, and I firmly believe this.
I was an honor student in high school, and graduated with a major in Spanish from Luther College in Decorah, IA.
I taught at Arthur Murray for 3 years as a dance instructor, and daily experienced the need to explain the same concepts in many different ways.
I have worked with a psychologist, translating and administering performance and personality tests to students.
I have tutored in several different situations: teaching history to ESL students, teaching English to Asian immigrants, and helping adults learn to read.
I have worked in the office setting on and off for many years, honing my skills in Excel, Word, HTML, QuickBooks/Quicken and the like.
I have traveled many places in the world.
All these things contribute to my teaching. Hopefully, I can help you out.
