About Vera:

My name is Vera. I am a retired Special Education teacher of twenty five years. I taught all major subjects in elementary, middle and high school, but most of my recent experience has been on the high school level. My subjects were English literature and composition, algebra, geometry, general science, biology and study skills. I have no set teaching style other than being attentive to my students needs. I usually take my cues from the students by observing how they perceive information, their retention rate, and their individual learning style. This helps me develop a teaching plan tailored specifically for each student. I have done home tutoring through the school, private tutoring, and worked in an after school homework program. It didn't seem so much like work because I enjoyed the kids. As a child, I listened to my mother tell such wonderful stories about the children in her classes. That's when I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I have always been concerned about helping others and teaching was an ideal way to do just that. Teaching gives me such a feeling of joy and pride when I see a smile come across a child's face after reaching a goal or any amount of success after much struggle. I love it when I run into a former student on the street and he or she tells me how much I helped them grow to be confident and successful adults. They tell me how my endless efforts of encouragement to keep trying, my slogan "don't give up, give out", or just a smile of acknowledgment has helped them not only when they were in my class, but in their present lives as well. I think children are amazing. They keep me young, they teach me, they bring out the best in me.
