My junior year of high school was truly the best year of my life. I was gifted with an amazing experience that forever changed me. I spent the whole year in Japan though the Rotary Youth Exchange. I had the chance of a lifetime; and was able to live in a whole new world. I stayed with eight different Families, and attended a normal Japanese high school. It was not just all fun; I also experienced some of the most strenuous times in my life. What I learned and experienced made me realize who I was and what I could achieve In the beginning it was a grueling task. I did not know anyone, and I could not really understand what people were saying to me. I felt like it was impossible for me to learn a new language and culture in just a year. Sometimes I would just wonder if it was ever worth going to Japan; I felt so sad and lonely. I will never forget when my host mom found me crying in my room, gave me a quick hug, and than told me that no matter what was wrong that she would help me fix it. From that moment on I realized that I was never truly alone, I had people who were willing to help and support me. I found that if I just tried a little harder, I could do anything. The love and support of people, who I had just met, helped me find my inner strength, and I stood on my two feet and did what I was always capable of doing. If I had never took the chance and stepped out of the comfort of my home, I would have never learned what I did. I realized what real love was: when someone who you never have met loves you, young girls who carry a dictionary to talk to you, and people you have only known for a short year say that you are their family, and they will never forget you. Learning Japanese is my biggest accomplishment. I worked so hard for my knowledge, and I still continue to Japanese everyday.
